Doggett was doomed from the start. He never got a fair chance by the fans who were heartbroken over the loss of Mulder. He also didn't get a fair chance by 1013 because they, a lot of the time, didn't give him much to work with. That being said, Doggett was a great, great character. I think that most of us who stuck with TXF after the departure of Mulder would disagree that Doggett was a replacement. Yes, in the strictest sense, he took Duchovny's place as the male lead in the show, but that's about it. I think the loss of his son, while at first made him seem to have a Mulder like quest, ultimately proved how much different they really were. Like CW said, Luke was killed in a horrific, but utterly normal turn of events. Just like Samantha's disappearance reeked with the paranormal, Luke's disappearance reeked with basic criminal actions. I think the problem is that CC & Co. don't know how to write a normal, happy person. Of course, a normal, happy person with a wife and kids and a dog wouldn't have any reason to delve into the X-Files as much as Mulder, Scully, Doggett, or even Monica did. Actually, I have no idea what Monica is like. Perhaps she's terribly happy.

My knowledge of Robert Patrick prior to TXF was limited to his role in Terminator 2, so I really had no idea how I'd take to him on the show. But I believe he proved himself to be an exceptional actor. He made Doggett a real person who I cared about a lot. I'm hoping that he gets a regular role on a television show soon so that I can see him weekly again.
