Like IG said, generally speaking Mulder was given more traditionally female traits and Scully given traditionally male. I think it could have worked switched, but given what I know now I just can't imagine Scully with Mulder's characteristics. I'm not sure how the dynamic between the two would have been. To see Mulder berating Scully for her paranormal beliefs might not have worked for me. I don't know why.

As far as if Scully had been a man, I still think it could have worked. In season two when Scully and Mulder were seperated, the Mulder/Krycek dynamic really worked. I don't think just any guy would have worked, it would have to be someone who connected to Mulder/DD well. Someone like, say, Nick Lea or even Mitch Pileggi. It might not have been as popular with two male partners, but I still would have watched.

How about if Mulder had been a woman?
