I think the prqctice may have begun with John Cleese's Fawlty Towers. Two seasons (or "Series" as they call them) and that's it. I know Ricky Gervais followed that practice and the excellent "Life on Mars" had just two seasons as well. I suppose Dr Who didn't do that! What are they on--about 20 plus series?!

Sometimes it can be good if the creators have a specific end in mind. I'm watching this "Person's Unknown" series on NBC and they promise it will be wrapped up by the end of the summer.
