They also have shorter seasons (series), something like 8-13 episodes as opposed to 25. That can make for better quality as they don't have to crank them out.

Fawlty Towers' 2 seasons were also 4 years apart. I guess a guy like Cleese can do it however he wants to.

The original Doctor Who show got to 26 seasons before being canceled. They are on #5 since the 2005 revival (with 2 spin offs under way as well). So if you combine them, they are on 31 seasons & still going. They hit on a formula that can keep it going forever, the lead can be replaced without losing the audience.
