Stardoe, Americans laugh at themselves all the time. When my wife and I were dating, she was amazed at how many jokes were told by David Letterman (know him? late night comedy show host) about the President. She came from Eastern Europe so she wasn't used to leaders being disrespected on TV like that. She got used to it. We have plenty of skit comedy shows that make fun of just about every aspect of American life. Sure, we have some kill joys who think doing that "weakens" America or that the media is part of a left wing conspiracy but most folks like laughing at stuff like that. The need to sentimentalise is what makes our comedy fall short of the British since they get nasty without any redemption afterwards.

I really could care less about some new sitcom. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy guy so I watch those shows. I like a comedy or romantic movie but sitcoms have really gone downhill here and life's too short.
