...especially because I have no intention of watching the show. It doesn't appeal to me, and knowing it's an American-ization of a successful show from another country doesn't help. That kind of humor rarely transfers well (IMO). I know people love the US version of The Office, but the couple of episodes I saw paled in comparison to the UK version.

Stardoe, you do make some valid points about US culture, even if they might be broad generalizations. Your comments, combined with our presidential campaign, makes me think the entertainment industry (especially network television) is behind the times. We are on the verge of electing either the first African-American president or first female vice-president. That is a big, huge, honkin' deal here, and I'll be glad when the elections are over and we've had time to reflect on what a remarkable election this has been.

But I think we've seen some things recently that indicate there are some people who have just realized we're about to have an historical moment, and are freaking out a bit. Some people just don't like change. I'd throw television execs in that group (network - not cable). In their efforts to offend as few people as possible, they tend to make safe, conservative choices. They won't make changes to their programming until they are fairly certain the majority of the population has moved on and will be accepting. I don't think the current programming adequately reflects our incredibly diverse population and culture.

Just my take on this, anyway. Which doesn't answer your question about the show! I did read a favorable review of it in the Washington Post, however.
