Subject: "Firefly" on DVD

We never watched this show during its shortlived broadcast life, but my son and I saw the movie based on it ("Serenity") a couple of years ago and enjoyed it, so we got him the DVD set for Christmas. We're all watching it and really enjoying it!

Here are some things I like about the series: the cast includes a happily married couple, which is a nice contrast to having every character be single; there is an almost-even mix of men and women in the cast, which is a nice contrast to the typical ensemble show (i.e. "NCIS" or the various "CSI" shows) which usually have only two women and four or five men; and the relationship between Simon and River is highly reminiscent of the whole Mulder/Samantha thing on XF (with the obvious exception that Simon has "succeeded" where Mulder "failed" and has actually rescued his sister). Also, there's LOTS of shipper potential, between both Simon and Kaylee and Mel and Nora.

For all that I like the show, I understand why it wasn't a big hit. A sci-fi/western/comedy/drama is not going to be everybody's cup of tea.
