Subject: nature vs. nuture in fantasy

In particular, Harry Potter vs. Hellboy.

I was thinking that Harry was somehow destined to become a great wizard from the moment of birth regardless of the death of his parents and being raised by total a**holes. I would think a kid raised the way he was would turn out to be a little monster who hated people but he retains what his parents had (unless something changes in the last 2 books which I haven't read).

In contrast, the Hellboy movies have the lead character being the son of the Devil but he was raised by a kindly scientist in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. So he's basically a regular guy who likes TV, beer, pop music, etc. He likes to go fight evil & cares about doing good even if he often fails at it. He has been tempted to give in to his true nature but has resisted in the end as he's in love with a (mostly) human woman.

So which makes more sense, raised bad or raised good?
