Did you see the second or third Terminator films? A fourth is due next year sans Arnold. This series is taking place between the 2nd and 3rd films (or perhaps pretending the third film didn't happen).

The events of film #1 were that Arnold S. played an evil terminator sent to kill Sarah Connor before she gave birth to John who would lead the human revolt. He began to kill every Sarah Connor in the LA phonebook to be sure and as luck would have it, our Sarah was listed last. Kyle Reese is sent thru to save Sarah. Sarah at this point is an ordinary young woman who works as a waitress (totally different than the kick ass lady we see later). Kyle protects her and a series of chases begins. She thinks he's crazy at first but sees things like the terminator take gun shots to the chest and kep coming.

Sarah and Kyle are caught by the police and the same shrink who will later have Sarah in his asylum talks to Kyle and classifies him insane. He explains to Sarah that both men are on PCP, wear body armor to not feel pain. Arnold comes to the police station, first gives his famous "I'll be back" line and kills everyone there except Kyle and Sarah who escape. She now believes him.

In a flashback, we see Kyle admiring a picture of Sarah in a safe bunker in the future. A terminator attacks and the picture is destroyed in the fire. In the present, Kyle tells Sarah of how she will train John to be ready for the war. He tells her he's in love with her and they make love. Then they take on Arnold in another big chase that leads to an industrial factory in which Kyle is killed but Sarah is able to crush the terminator in a steel press. She later discovers she's pregnant, heads to Mexico to wait for the war. The picture we saw Kyle with is taken in Mexico as she talks to a tape recorder telling John all that he needs to know for the future.

Film #2-if you didn't see it, has Arnold return as a reprogrammed terminator who will protect John from an advanced terminator (T1000 as opposed to Arnold's T800) who is made of liquid metal, basically can morph himself to look like anyone. Sarah is in the looney bin and John is with some miserable foster parents who get killed by the T1000. Arnold is able to save John who realizes the terminator is programmed to obey him. He tells the machine not to kill any humans and to blend in more.

John asks that they rescue his mother which Arnold thinks is a bad idea as the T1000 will think of this as their next move. Sarah is in the process of escaping when all parties break in and another battle ensues. They get away and their next thought is to stop Skynet from being made in the first place. Miles Dyson is a scientist working at Cyberdine Systems who is using the remains of the terminator from the first film to take technology to the next step not knowing what this will lead to.

Sarah wants to kill Dyson but John convinces him to help them destroy all traces of the research. They do so at the cost of Dyson's life and once again, another fight with the T1000. They are able to destroy it in molten metal and their Arnold model voluntarily does the same to prevent his parts from being used. Seemingly he had some sense of human feelings and the need to sacrifice himself at the end. The ending was going to state that this was it, bad future averted but it was left open so more sequels could come.
