Subject: the end of Star Trek

Enterprise will be cancelled at the end of this season thus taking Star Trek off the air for the first time since 1987. Enterprise falls short of the usual 7 seasons done by the sequel shows although it does beat the original series bvy a year. Trekkies (or -ers) have been raising money to save the show, why? Trek has done more than enough for now, give it a nice rest. Maybe in 5 or 10 years, think about a come back. For those who want to remember:

Star Trek, the Orignal Series (ST: TOS)-1966-69
I know it's corny & outdated but it's still the best. Just got season 1 on DVD, great stuff. The template for all that came after, just about any ep from any later series has a seed in a concept from here. Spock is so the stand in for all nerds everywhere. Best eps: Devil in the Dark, City on the Edge of Forever, Space Seed, Mirror Mirror, The Doomsday Machine, Balance of Terror, The Changeling, Journey to Babel.

Star Trek: The Animated Series (ST: TAS)-1973-4
Poor, cheap animation but great, sophisticated plots. Sequels to TOS eps and a great exploration of Spock's childhood.

Star Trek I-VI 1978-91
The original cast is older & very wink-wink to the audience in these films. They don't bear up so well as the show did. II is the best, V the worst.

Star Trek: The Next Generation (ST: TNG)-1987-94
Brought in more drama & gave the whole crew opportunities to shine rather than just the top 3. But got a little too goody-goody liberal. The ship is so cozy, like exploring the universe from one's living room. Some say better than TOS but for me it's a close second. Data & Worf split Spock's traits up well. Best eps: Booby Trap, The High Ground, Yesterday's Enterprise, Best of Both Worlds, Reunion, The Mind's Eye, Darmok, Cause and Effect, Relics.

ST films 7-10: The TNG cast films are slightly better than the TOS films. I'd say First Contact is the best of all 10. Unfortunately, no room for any character development. By #10, out of plots too.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine(ST: DS9)-1993-99
Diminishing returns start here. But they did have great villians with the Jem'hadar & the Dominion. Great build up & war story arcs. Threw in Worf in S4 to boost it. Odo was a fair alien, Quark over used. Best eps: The Jem'Hadar, Civl Defense, The Visitor.

Star Trek: Voyager (ST: VOY)-1995-2001
OK, here is where I drew the line. Great premise with poor execution. The explore part of ST was neglected in the last 2 shows, this should have been nothing but. But by now, the plots are just variations on what's come before. The ship is way too self-succificent, why not break downs & having to fit in alien tech? And to have 2 opposing crews stuck together. Should have been like having Union & Confederate soldiers sharing a boat ride. But little to nothing comes of it. The hologram Doctor was cool but he got overused. Then they brought in the Borg & Seven of Nine in S4 to up the action & sex factors. Seven was OK in the alien role, her & Janeway were sort of the female Kirk-Spock. But not good enough. Best?: Scorpion pt.s 1 & 2.

Enterprise (ST: ENT)-2001-05
Contradicts many things established in the other series. Has encounters with the Borg & Ferengi 100s of years before their "first contacts". Nice attempt with S3's season long Xindi arc. S4 is trying to make everything make sense (why are Klingons without ridges in TOS, how the Vulcans went from jerks to super cool). Building towards the founding of the Federation which they won't get to now. Too set in time travel & interference from the future. Top 3 eps voted by fans will be shown at the end of the month.

Supposedly, another film is in the works that will have an entirely new cast & setting. Will anyone go?
