How it happened -

Bud and Coates were walking along a dirt path back to the school that had gotten blown up (mentioned in the beginning of the ep); it was being re-opened and they had been invited to the ceremony. They saw a little boy digging in the dirt, off the path and speculated that there were land mines still there. Bud sent Coates to get someone from the village for help, while he tried to stop the boy from digging around (by talking to him and waving his arms and stuff like that). The boy didn't understand him, even threw a rock at Bud, and Bud stepped forward (off the path), going to try to stop the boy from getting into any danger, when he himself stepped on a mine and ended up where you saw him.
