In reply to: John 's message, "Re: Council Allows Finning to Continue!" on 940844740PDT

There are sound reasons to stop finning. I don't know of any way to justify killing 50,000 sharks a year for their fins. This is simalar to the slaughter of the Buffalo in the american west, hudreds of thousands of wild animals killed for thier hides, the meat left to rot in the dirt. Disgracefull!!!! It's always hear this from the local commercials when regulations are suggested. Thats our livelyhood, and it's our fish so we can do what we want. Bull...... Where do you think those sharks come from. These are not residents that hang around your islands, they're part of a large highly migratory population, that your fisherman are damaging for nothing more than their fins. If this was only a local issue those sharks would already be gone. Your not just killing your sharks your killing all our sharks. The reason you don't realise this is the constant influx of migrating sharks creates the illusion that everything is all right, but it's not. I've spent some time in the islands, and I know it's a hard place to make a living, but brother those guys out there finning are in the WRONG line of work. Since your local government is to weak to do anything about it (to much on the payroll is more like it) it's about time others stepped in.

Jim
