I applaud the decision of the Western Pacific Fishery Council in identifing what appears to be a workable compromise to the shark finning issue. The Council appeared to make an informed decision based on science and the fact that the Magnuson-Stevens Act supports sustainable fisheries.

I also admire the Council for not bending to all the sensationalized drivel from the eco-terrorists and mainland politicians that have all of a sudden have become Pacific "pelagic" shark management experts. I guess their source of information originates from the "Baywatch" movie star; the newest eco-terrorest spokesperson. Come on guys...... you can do better than that!

The simple fact is that management of the incidental catches of blue shark in the Western Pacific area is not exactly like manageing the East Coast shark populations off the US mainland. Different management plans are required for different shark species populations inhabiting different ecosystems. Makes sense to me. I believe the Council realized this and acted accordingly.

As an islander, we are always attempting to convince US mainlanders that Western Pacific cultures, economies, and even our fisheries are different.I am glad that the Council realizes that OUR fishery management plans need to mesh (pardon the pun) with the Western Pacific fishing region, not the Washington DC fishing region.

I would like to thank the Western Pacific Council members for acting in good faith for those people who live, work and fish in the Western Pacific region.

John
