I've some experience with tigers from fishing down in Texas. We've all heard the vicious shark story's well the tiger fits closer to the myth than any of the others. Most sharks are rather specific in what they eat: for instance white sharks feed on seals, Mako's on pelagic fish etc. For Tigers this is simply not the case. They're opportunistic to the extreme and will eat anything. Sea turtles, Rays, marine mammals whatever they can get there jaws on they'll eat. A warm water inshore species they also often come into areas frequented by man. Their jaws are extremely large and wide for their size allowing them to attack large prey. Their teeth have a unique hook shape. Mako's have kind of needle like designed for grabbing and tearing. Tiger sharks teeth are more like carpet hooks: designed to dig in and cut to the side. When I tiger grabs on to something he shakes his head side to side like a bulldog: the teeth dig in and cut the chunk out. I've heard this adaptation is for feeding on sea turtles, this side to side sawing motion is used to cut through their heavy shell. At any rate I would not want to tangle with one. I read years ago that tigers are responsible for the vast majority of lethal attacks world wide. I believe it. Where a white might hit you throw you into the air than leave you cause your not his cup of tea. A tiger would grab your leg and then patiently saw it off. The largest Tiger I've seen is my friend Ira Loveday's 13'6" Tiger, that shark could of easily cut a person in half. I somehow doubt that the shark in question was 15 ft (people tend to exaggerate) but if it was they had every reason to be concerned.

Tight lines Jim
