Yes. If the U.S. does attack, the goal will be to remove Saddam from power. The next step wold be to set up a provisional government to transition the country to democratic elections.

Yeah, I've discovered that since my last posting. Oh well...can't blame a guy for asking, right? ;p

1. The primary concern concerning U.S. citizens is that Saddam would sell WMD to terrorist groups. While there is no proof of any link between Saddam and al-Qaeda, links between the Iraqi government and other terrorist groups, particularly Palestinian groups.

2. Are you suggesting that the U.S. just stand by while those weapons are aimed at someone else and say, "Oh well, at least it's not us." WMD are really only useful against civilian targets, since military targets can be destroyed just as easily with conventional weapons.

Palestinian terrorists primarily target Israeli civilians and to a lesser extent, US military targets. Also, the Palestinian cause is a totally different issue... if the US is planning on continuing their presence in that region, they really need to work harder on negotiating peace between Palestine and Israel... preferably with terms that aren't always so pro-Israeli (which has been the problem with some US-proposed terms of peace). Although I agree that the main part of that problem is the general racism that exists between Palestinians and Israelis... no matter what the US or any other country does, peace will never eventuate in that region until the Palestinians and Israelis just learn to get along with each other.

2. A very common logical fallacy is to express one's own opinions as being held by large group of anonymous people in attempting to give one's opinions more weight. This is a version of the "anonymous expert" argument, which is fallable because one cannot determine the validity and/or expertise of the source. The very least you can do is cite a poll.

The information I got was from a television documentary -- so presumably those journalists would have run some kind of poll. There were also several interviews with Iraqi and American authorities (including former members of the CIA who reminded us that it was the US who empowered Saddam in the first place) who cited the same opinions aforementioned. But yeah... there's my source. ;p

If I ever state my own personal opinion, I'll cite it as being precisely that.

In any case, it seems that we are all in agreement that Bush is primarily motivated by personal reasons (such as revenge) and that a non-UN sanctioned pre-emptive strike on Iraq would be a bad idea.

Yes, the US has so far worked within UN framework, but they've also made it very clear that they're not comfortable doing so and that they've been considering the option of working outside United Nations sanctions. Let's all hope that it's an option that is never chosen.
