USA Soccer gets to go to the round of 16, but as they said on ESPN Radio they "backed into it". Apparently we played a horrible game against a not-very-good team (though one should always beware of a team with nothing to lose), losing to Poland 3-1, but advance thanks to South Korea's 1-0 upset win over Portugal.

Make that now three teams that shockingly did not make it out of group play (France, Argentina, Portugal). Make that two controversies averted. Just as a drawing to determine who advances between South Korea and the United States would be guaranteed to outrage one country, having the U.S. and Portugal tied in points and Portugal advancing (in World Cup play goal differential counts as a tiebreaker before head-to-head play, which is the opposite of what Americans are used to) would have angered American soccer fans, though that at least wouldn't have the stink of a "fix". Glad to have both potential controversies averted.

We take back everything we said about you being sore losers over the whole Apollo Anton Ohno thing. You're wonderful. We love you!

The USA goes on to open the Round of 16 against Mexico. Psychologically, that may be the best team to open against. Our team knows they can beat Mexico, and they also know that Mexico can beat them, and there's that whole rivalry thing.
