Truth be told, for those of us that like action-oriented cartoons with plots that can satisfy adult viewers, the nineties were a wonderful time. In addition to Beast Wars and Beast Machines, we got one perhaps the best ever of the genre (at least, outside of Japan): Batman: The Animated Series. We also got the excellent Superman and Exo Squad, plus some decent ones in X-Men and Spider-Man. Toward the end of the nineties, we also got Digimon, which while on the surface looks like a cutesy kiddie cartoon, it also has a sophisticated plot that has won over many adult fans. One could get the impression from some of the BotCon panels that a lot of Transfans are also Digimon fans.

Unfortunately, this era has largely passed. Digimon is still going strong, and Justice League is in the same style as Batman:TAS and Superman, but it appears that we've largely returned to the styles of the eighties: lots of cutesy, and the cartoons that are action-oriented feature kiddified characters and marshmallow plots.

Really, you can't blame Hasbro for steering Armada in this direction. Like Fawndoo mentioned, Robots in Disguise was successful, and more importantly it was successful among the real target audience, namely boys of age 6-11 (in this demographic, RiD was even beating powerhouse Digimon). You can't really blame them for trying to copy that cartoon's success.
