Our theories are pretty damn close to one another - I also believe that Lazarus was a crewmember aboard the Ark II who managed to explode. After all, as the General explains to Spike, they didn't even know the Transformers were active again until Lazarus started sending them on missions and they picked up Megatron on the satellite telemetry. How did Lazarus find them if the General with his satellite network did not? Answer - if he knew they survived and managed to track them as they fell back to Earth (my thinking in this matter is that the Transformers might just show up as wreckage on radar, unless you knew what you were looking for).

As for who Lazarus may be - it could be any one of the crew, but if it is to have any emotional impact it would have to be Sparkplug: Lazarus' age is indeterminate enough (and hell, Sparkplug was healthy enough to train to go into space - even for a man in his mid fifties he could be in excellent shape) and he has the motive - after all, Transformers have disrupted his life and destroyed enough of his world. Perhaps he finally lost patience with them and snapped? Decided to destroy them all? After all, Lazarus' ordering Megatron to kneel (when he had already demonstrated that he was under his control) indicates something of a grudge, a desire to see Megatron humiliated.

Well, those are my thoughts - spooky close, eh? :-)
