IIRC he was seen with piledrivers along with Rumble in the cartoon, so there's a history there.

Alternatively it's possible he was repaired with Rumble's power chip convertor (As in Heavy Metal Wars) giving him the same powers.

Yup, I found that even a moment of hesitation added to the scene and gave Spike a depth he's long been missing. It was fine when it was just an adventure for a kid, but he lost his Dad to these, his brother is Lord knows where and he has a kid of his own to worry about.

How do we know he was EVER controlled. He clearly broke the programming a while back so it's possible he was just faking it so he could get hs comrades fixed up with little effort.

I though his first words were MARVELLOUS. You could just hear them being said in the Gen 1 Toon Megatrons voice, dripping with sarcasm and loathing.
