Sorry, but Bush's decision does seem to be a flagrant example of what the US charmingly refers to as "Pork barrel politics". He seems to be returning a favour to those in the industry who supported his campaign.

Slapping an exorbitant tarrif solely on imports is protectionism at best.

Certainly, the WTO believes there is a case to answer, and they know this stuff better than I do.

Once again, the US' new "global outlook" that was promised in the wake of the Sep 11 tragedy seems to be petering away in a cloud of unilateral self-interest.
