As parents of a Dyslexic child, we have come to understand the kind of frustration that you and your child go through.

This is why we opened U 2 Can Learn, in order to bring the Brightstar program to the Midlands, as you’re aware this program has changed the lives of hundreds of Dyslexic individuals in the London area.

And it has for our son, in just 6 weeks which consisted of 12 Brightstar Technology sessions and six one to one teaching sessions which were tailor made for his individual needs, he is now a very confident and eager young man.

As proud parents we want to show you how you can give your child a fighting chance in their education, but just as important how to improve their self esteem and confidence.

The results of our 9 year old son are astounding.

Word recognition: from 7 years to 9 years & 6 months
Spelling: from 6 years & 7 months to 8 years & 5 months
Comprehension:from 7 years & 10 months to 8 yeas & 7 months
Accuracy: from 6 years & 10 months to 7 years & 9 months

Since completing the BrightStar program he is now reading whole sentences not just words, his spelling homework from school was always a battle now it’s a joy to help him, he often attempts uncommon or long words which he never did before.

Another area that has improved is his memory, we no longer get the tantrums and “I forgot” when asked questions on the page he has just read. Since returning to school he has volunteered and been voted onto the school council, something he would never have done.

U 2 Can Learn mission statement is “to make education support and literacy intervention available to all at an affordable price” unless we did something about the price.

Details of the services we offer at our Telford Centre can be found on our web site
www.thehouseofknowledge.co.uk or contact us on 01952 240 999.

We are co-founders of Dyslexia Rx, LLC , a two-person business that offers testing for dyslexia. Included in the testing is a complete report that proves dyslexia conclusively, suggests an action plan for remediation, and lists accommodations for parents to present to the child’s school.

We also offer one-on-one tutoring in the Orton-Gillingham method, a research-based methodology for remediation in reading, writing, and spelling for people with dyslexia.

We began researching dyslexia several years ago when we noticed that the struggling readers we were working with as teachers were demonstrating similar and unusual patterns of struggle and that they were not improving with traditional best practices in reading instruction.

After years, now, of working with children who are confused by their inability to do what their peers can do quite easily, and who inevitably conclude that they’re stupid, it’s a relief on our part to finally be able to accurately diagnose these students with a very real language processing disorder (dyslexia) –supported by mountains of research – which they share with 20% of the general population.

After seeing the angst of parents who watch their children struggle – even fail – despite years of interventions, we find joy in knowing that, at last, we have a sure way to bring those students up to grade level in reading, writing, and spelling, using best practices for people with dyslexia.

Subject: See Right Dyslexia Glasses

John A. Hayes

See Right Dyslexia Glasses (patent pending) remove the problems associated with visual dyslexia that make it difficult to read. They are available from the Gifted Learning Project which is a nonprofit corporation started by Girard Sagmiller, author of "Dyslexia My Life".

The See Right Dyslexia Glasses sell for $218 plus shipping and have a 100% satisfaction & 100% money back guarantee .
They come in both adult and child size frames .They can be ordered at seerightglasses.com

There are several reasons why a close reading of the guarantees of products and services supposed to help dyslexics are generally almost worthless and why our guarantee is different. The predominate reason is that the unwritten reality is they have a high failure rate.I can understand that because if See Right Dyslexia Glasses claimed to help all dyslexics then they too would have a high failure rate.

The See Right Dyslexia Glasses do not help the dyslexics that do not have a visual problem. If the dyslexic looks at a page of print and all letters and words are stable, sharp and in focus then the See Right Dyslexia Glasses will not help as that is all they do for the visual dyslexic. They allow the visual dyslexic to see the printed page in a stable sharp and focused manner.

Visual dyslexics seem to be adept at reading the information at seerightglasses.com and determining if the See Right Dyslexia Glasses might help them. There has been about a 5% return rate on the glasses. That also infers that other dyslexics can also determine that their problem is not visual.

To put this into the proper perspective, dyslexics who feel they can determine a visual problem that makes it difficult to read have such a high rate of success with the See Right Dyslexia Glasses that we can offer a complete refund for those that are not helped.( return shipping is not covered)

We are now able to offer See Right Dyslexia Glasses in prescription lenses as special orders. There are a few problems associated with this in keeping with our 100% money back guarantee. As prescription glasses would only be returnable if mistakes were made in the prescription,it will be necessary to try the See Right Dyslexia Glasses to determine if they help your visual dyslexia symptoms first.
Near sighted dyslexics who normally can see the page at a close distance without their glasses should have no problem trying the See Right Dyslexia Glasses by themselves.Far sighted dyslexics or those who wear bifocals will find themselves not only having to try to evaluate them while wearing 2 pairs of glasses but also find that they have to
stop light from entering from the sides for a proper evaluation.

Just 2 more statements
1) See Right Dyslexia Glasses do NOT require a personal evaluation
2)Dyslexics that suffer from poor depth perception are usually visual dyslexics and will also have normal depth perception restored with the glasses

Hello!

I am a Regional Manager for EF Foundation for Foreign Study, a non-profit that facilitates high school exchange. We are currently looking for host families for some of our students. The reason I am writing this forum is because we have a particular student, a girl from the Netherlands, who has dyslexia. As an organization we try to match our students with host families that can provide a caring and understanding environment, so I wanted to see if anyone on this forum might be interested in hosting or know of someone who might make a great host family for this student.

All we ask from our host families is that they provide basic needs, along with a caring environment. Each student comes with their own insurance and spending money, in an effort to decrease any financial hardship on the family. The homestay is for an entire school year and the student would attend your local high school. Please let me know if you are interested in this opportunity.

Thanks so much for your time,

I need two-three volunteers to try my technique in overcoming dyslexic symptoms via the net. These symptoms should be permanent so that we could check whether the method works or not. (I have had success with dyslexics in face-to-face training.)

The session will take about one-two hours through Yahoo messenger. It is not harmful, it is not dangerous, at least, it will not be worse; and, it is not about money at all.

I am just curious whether I could do something with dyslexia or not in this way. You can read more about my method on my website - www.proself.com. - even though it does not relate directly to dyslexia.

If you are interested and need more details, send me e-mail – supermind@proself.com.

Looking Glass Spelling uses multisensory decoding strategies to help students in grades 4-12 who are reading 2 or more years below grade level learn to encode as they improve decoding and vocabulary. As seen in March, 2005 at the International Dyslexia Association Manhattan Conference and the Council for Exceptional Children Convention in April, 2004. Works great as a supplement to Orton, Wilson, and Lindamood instruction. Great for one-on one, group, and home instruction. See a sample on the G. Author:

[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 08:29:33 05/03/05 Tue

Some years ago I invented a word game which is a substantial twist on Scrabble.

In an effort to promote it, I frequently do demos at book and game stores explaining the game over a played-out board.

Some of the people I have met have said they were dyslexic. To my surprise, these people are often extremely good at recognizing the words played on the board (better than non-dyslexic persons). This requires an ability to grasp words with whole series of letters missing in them. Perhaps that is something they are used to doing.

Details of the game are at http://www.wildwords.us

I really wonder if this game has something more than fun to offer under these circumstances.

The Reading Success Lab Reading Intervention Program Helps Readers Build Word Recognition Skills

The Reading Success Lab Skill Builder Module was designed to build reading skill levels for identified weaknesses. There are a number of Intervention Sets available, for use with the Skill Builder Module, targeted for different academic problems and weaknesses. Intervention Sets are specific word lists that the reader learns to recognize instantly by sight. Through 20 minutes of daily exercises the reader begins to master the content, with answers becoming automatic. Readers who practice with the Skill Builder Module Intervention Sets get better at word recognition, even words they have not yet practiced.

Often phonics-based exercises can be effective with readers who lack fundamental reading skills. The true dyslexic reader (estimated to be 5-7% of total population) will gain little benefit from phonics-based exercises. Sounding out words using phonics may result in slow and halting reading, which severely hampers fluent reading and reading comprehension. True dyslexic readers will often continue to have to sound out words, and thus never achieve fluent reading.

Reading Success Lab, www.readingsuccesslab.com, is offering a free trial of the Skill Builder Module with a sample of our Grade 3 Intervention Set. With this download we are also offering free dyslexia screening in the form of downloadable software.

Currently, with the purchase of an Intervention Set ($29.00) you receive the Skill Builder Module free ($60.00 value). In addition, we offer full assessment software, our Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment For Reading Difficulties Module, currently for $69.00 allowing for 15 runs (enough to test the whole family). The Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment For Reading Difficulties Module identifies a wide range of reading difficulties and determines where the reading process is breaking down. The reading evaluation presents students with a series of reading tasks and then collects both time (speed of performance) and accuracy (percent of task items completed correctly) data when the tasks are being performed. The measurement of both the speed and accuracy of performance is a unique aspect of the assessment system. Typical assessment procedures only measure the accuracy of reading performance. The measurement of speed of performance not only makes the assessment system a powerful procedure for identifying learning difficulties, it also makes it an excellent procedure for measuring educational progress associated with attempts to improve a student's reading performance.

James ‘Mike’ Royer, Ph.D., Director of the Laboratory for the Assessment and Training of Academic Skills (LATAS), of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and software developer Jeremy Wise, Ph.D. developed the Reading Success Lab software for assessing and treating learning disabilities.

Teaching and Learning with Discrepant Event Inquiry

MINDTRONICS! AND INQUIRY ALIVE! are the acknowledged full resource for teachers, government instructors teaching problem solving, or company trainers teaching thinking skills, to help their students systematically identify and solve problems: discrepant events. The two books, on one CD-Rom, present over 100 discrepant event lesson examples for all learning levels.

It's not the destination but the journey.

These two books offer teachers timely teaching tools for taking science and social studies to their highest level of meaning. The books help teachers quickly turn the seemingly dull scientific method into exciting, clearly defined ways to apply analyses of events found in news, history, geography, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and science. The inquiry methods help teachers and students succeed in bringing Life to arcane events or issues leaving lasting impressions on the importance of those events or issues, and, notably, what it all means in students' lives. The inquiry approach also makes it easier for students to recognize that few things substitute for the fulfillment a resourceful mind brings.

YES! Non-reading Students and Challenged Students Love Inquiry!

Non-reading elementary school students may not know what the word investigate means; yet, they own great analytical skills. All students examine, consider, and probe the given discrepant event information. Students also form views and try to discover more about the practical details of each discrepant event.

Group Therapy

By using the interactive cognitive methods in MINDTRONICS and INQUIRY ALIVE, students shape and sharpen their organized thought. The students' own familiar ways to explore information; that knowledge, added to the group teamwork to gather scientific investigation, brings a self-awareness and self-belief much akin to the group therapy given to at-risk children and adults.

Signposts to Answers and Increased Choices

Although non-reading students may need the teacher to read the discrepant events and fact sheets, the students weigh their own theories and other student theories. Students learn how their questioning muscle marks signposts to answers and increases choices, always building on the reliable knowledge, given and found. Then students back the most promising logic offered by applying what they have learned.

Subject: More from the jar

Date Posted: 03:04:39 01/15/05 Sat

Life in a jar represents the restrictive and protective aspects of our lives, the subjects age and gender in the jar is irrelevant, the main feature is the object e.g. the jar and what it represents to the individual this inanimate object could just as easily be a gold fish bowl or fish tank, a cage or transparent box. Whoever you are you could live in a jar, at some point in our lives we become that person within the jar, lonely, naked and vulnerable. However some of us like the thought of being inside the jar, as a form of protection, the jar becomes our womb our very existence is protected, sustained, fed and nourished within and cut off from the outside world.
Alternatively being imprisoned means not being able to do as we please, restricted with no definite direction to go in, no guidance and feeling uncontrollably helpless like floating around in a weightless room. The subject or victim wants to break out but they have no means of escape many people can be in this predicament are you one of them? Do you suffer from abuse, asthma, dyslexia, school bullying, a victim of crime, or live on the streets as one of the homeless consider the situations the many illnesses that disable people or are the cause of mental illness do you live in a jar. Try to form your own definition of life in a jar while you enjoy reading this book and if you have a story to tell please write to me email - srsthejar@aol . Com.
Life in a jar is by no means intended to be an educational publication, rather it aims to become a source of encouragement and provide readers with positive thoughts regarding their predicament. The need to do this came from the author’s observations and personal experience of life in various predicaments. Indeed the authors own life story gave him the main driving force for doing something positive for society on an international level. Needless to say the author requires a great deal of co-operation from the public in which to achieve his objectives. Peoples own life stories of courage and determination to reach their goal form the body of this book.

See Right Dyslexia Glasses (patent pending) remove the problems associated with visual dyslexia that make it difficult to read. They are available from the Gifted Learning Project which is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to helping dyslexics started by Girard Sagmiller, author of "Dyslexia My Life". www.giftedlearningproject.org

The See Right Dyslexia Glasses sell for $218 plus shipping.
They are sold in sizes for both adults or children, come in gold tone metal frames with adjustable nose pieces and are made with a high rare earth metal content glass to achieve the necessary filtering properties. They are precision ground to be optically neutral and tempered for strength and safety as well as federal regulations. The tempered glass is very hard and scratch resistant.

Not all dyslexics have visual dyslexia so an important question is:which dyslexics will be helped by these glasses? The best test would be to look at a page of print and determine if all letters and words are stable sharp and in focus. If so then these glasses will not help.

To be brief there are 3 major groups of problems that the glasses remove:dynamic ,static and light.

The dynamic problems involve motion and include such problems as jumping or jittering letters and words or what has been described as reading through a waterfall.Having words appear to float in and out of focus is also dynamic.

The static problems usually involves a pattern of missing letters at the beginning, middle or end of words,The rare reversal of letters or the slightly more common transposing of letters and numbers.

The light problems are where there appears a light glow either around letters or over parts of words obscuring them. This can be associated with both dynamic and static problems also.

In sympathy with the dyslexics that have purchased products with little results only to find the business philosophy behind the guarantees is "take the money and run",I feel it is important to clearly state our guarantee.

100% Satisfaction Guaranteed.

100% of cost refunded

!!! Excludes processing fee for credit cards which can be as high as 20% from pay pal and internet cards !!!!

Excludes our $2.50 shipping in U.S.

Reason for returning. Did not give me 100% satisfaction. The glasses didn't keep my hair dry when it rained or the glasses didn't increase my gas mileage by 30% will also work as valid reasons.

As Checks and money orders have no fees associated with them
only the $2.50 for shipping will not be returned.Shipping will be held up until check clears.

The Reading Success Lab approach to intervention for reading problems is very simple and backed by extensive research and published studies. Research shows it is not sufficient to teach the dyslexic reader how to sound out words. This often results in slow and halting reading as the reader struggles to identify each word. If reading is halting, then reading comprehension is lost.

Our Skill Builder Module with Intervention Sets allows the reader to work on increasing their sight vocabulary. If the reader can see and instantly recognize a word, then comprehension can be automatic. The larger the sight vocabulary, the faster the reader can read and the greater the comprehension of the material.

We offer an affordable reading intervention program for readers Grade 1 through adult. We have recently released Intervention Sets for Math Skill Building.

MY girlfriend is dislexic and we have been having a seriously hard time finding text books that are geared towards people with her disease. If there is someone out there that can help me find a website where I can buy these texts books from, I would greatly appreciate it. she is extremely determined to get her GED but she has become very set back due to her learning disability. She does everything phonetically, and if its not phonetic she had trouble understading. I need to find some way to help her. Thank you all and god bless.

Thanks again, Thomas.

I am a 54 year old woman who si dyslexic. Please, someone, teach me to read and study so that I may learn and retain information and express myself. I am so frustrated!!! I know I'm smart and creative, but it's all stuck inside of me. When I was in school, I was shy; teachers and counselors paid no attention to me. I assume they thought I was not worth their time. I have suffered ever since. I've always wanted to go to college - when I tried, I either failed or professors became impatient with me when I'd ask for help. PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP ME AND CARE ABOUT ME!!! I'm running out of time for being successful. I have no financial resources to pay for counseling or instruction.

Dr. Cestnick is now available to conduct clinical evaluations for the general public and she is currently situation in the greater Boston area.

I wanted to share with you that a great scientist is now conducting clinical evaluations of dyslexia for the general public. I thought your audience might want to be aware of this.
Dr. Laurie Cestnick, Neuroscientist at Harvard/M.I.T. and Psychologist, is a world-authority on reading and dyslexia. Dr. Cestnick has been working with people with dyslexia for over ten years, and from many regions around the globe (Canada, Australia, UK, America). She measures the brain activity of people as they perform reading and reading-related tasks, as well as offers full neuropsychological and linguistic evaluations. Dr. Cestnick speaks regularly on the topic of dyslexia and has an extensive publication record on the subject. At present she conducts her clinical work at North Worcester Psychological Services in Fitchburg, MA. Here you will receive the most advanced assessment of reading disability available. The number for NWPC is 978-342-4344, and their website is www.nwpconline.com. It is rare to find a great scientist available for clinical evaluations. I can also attest personally that she is caring and children feel very comfortable in her presence.

Many children and adults have already benefitted from working with Dr. Cestnick, it is my hope that this message reaches many more so that her impact on this illness can improve the lives of others.

sincerely,
Jack Conroy

I have been an Optometric Vision Therapist for 15 years. Vision Therapy Programs are very sucessful in helping students with reading, spelling., memory, and handwriting.
For those with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia that do not respond successfully to traditional vision therapy I use other reading techniques I have discovered over the years. I tutor ages 5 through adults and have been sucessful with students with all types of reading and writing disorders. I also work with ADHD, ADD, and LD students. Most of my clients come to me after many unsuccessful attempts in other treatment programs, and yet with hard work special excercises and encouragement we end up being successful. Recent studies in Dyslexia are finding that Dyslexics are likely to have unstable fixation, which makes the words move on the page as well as a poor relationship between the auditory and visual parts of the brain. Vision Therapy can be an enormous help for these problems. I am a certified optometric vision therapist with my own tutoring service - Student Learning Recovery in Apex NC. Schools in the UK are recognising the benefits for all pupils when "dyslexia friendly" good practice is used to support learners who think faster than they currently read, write or spell.

The focus is on what happens in the mainstream classroom - which is where most dyslexic learners spend most of their time - with a particular emphasis on empowerment and differentiation through learning styles and preferences. This approach makes the learning of dyslexic pupils a whole class/school issue, rather than just the responsibility of a special needs specialist. The achievements of successful schools are being recognised through "kitemark" schemes which, in the UK, will soon have national recognition.

As an independent consultant and trainer I provide training for schools and government departments in the UK, Europe and Hong Kong and I will also be presenting a paper on the topic at the International Dyslexia Conference in the UK in 2004. I am available to deliver consultancy and training in this area and welcome enquiries from interested parties.

Although he could not read, his teachers would continue to pass him on to the next grade because that was easier than finding a way to teach him.

I have breast cancer and I am not sure how long I will be around to read and write for him. We need help and we need it fast. We live in Los Angeles, California.

I WORK WITH GIRARD SAGMILLER,AUTHOR OF "DYSLEXIA MY LIFE"AND SELL GLASSES OUT OF HIS NON-PROFIT THE GIFTED LEARNING CENTER.THE CLAIM I MAKE FOR THE GLASSES THAT PROVES TRUE ALMOST 100% OF THE TIME IS THAT FOR THE DYSLEXIC THAT CAN DESCRIBE VISUAL PROBLEMS THAT MAKE IT HARD TO READ,THESE GLASSES REMOVE THE VISUAL PROBLEM.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE GLASSES CAN BE FOUND AT
HCITY.COM/GLP_GLASSES

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT GIRARD CAN BE FOUND ON HIS WEB SITE
DYSLEXIAMYLIFE.COM

THE GLASSES HAVE A MONEY BACK GUARENTEE ( EXCEPT FOR RETURN SHIPPING).SO FAR NO GLASSES HAVE BEEN RETURNED.

AS A BONUS FOR DYSLEXICS WITH POOR DEPTH PERCEPTION THE GLASSES ALSO RESTORE NORMAL DEPTH PERCEPTION.

FOR THE DYSLEXICS THAT CAN DESCRIBE THEIR VISUAL PROBLEM OR HAVE POOR DEPTH PERCEPTION THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TELL INSTANTLY THAT THEIR SYMPTOMS COME AND GO AS THEY PUT THE GLASSES ON AND TAKE THEM OFF.

MANY DYSLEXICS ARE ONLY ABLE TO DESCRIBE THEIR PROBLEMS AFTER SEEING NORMALLY WITH THE GLASSES.SOME DYSLEXICS (PROBALLY MOST )DO NOT HAVE VISUAL PROBLEMS AND UNFORTUNATLY THESE GLASSES WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR THEM.SHIP THEM BACK AND HAVE YOUR MONEY REFUNDED.

I am a mature student in my final year of a software engineering degree at University in the UK and researching and compiling my dissertation. The aim of the dissertation is primarily web accessibility for people with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia). I have done some research into dyslexia and feel that I am now ready to have a go at producing a software application.

I plan to produce a mobile phone text messaging simulator where the user can practice producing text messages using a simulation of a mobile phone. However I need a user group to test out the application and to complete a questionnaire on its usability and accessibility.

The results of the questionnaire will be analysed and incorporated into my dissertation but no one will be identified individually unless they give me their permission to do so.

I would like to hear from anyone who would be willing to volunteer to test the software out. The software will not be ready until mid January 2004 but if you would be willing to test it when it is available I would be delighted to hear from you.

I will inform you individually of the web address and any other relevant information that you will need when the software is ready.

Thanks.

I am writing to let you know about a new service, Asfedic Tuning, developed in the UK, that will be available on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia from mid December 2003.

Asfedia is purely a condition where the light sensors in your eyes are not properly tuned in to detect 'sharp edges' as quickly, or for as long as, they might, and in particular small sharp edges in sequences or 'arrays' of black on white - such as writing or text.

Asfedic Tuning is a totally quantitative, objective process designed to rapidly improve a person's reading speed, accuracy and stamina, or, as we prefer to put it, improve their 'access to text'. Asfedic Tuning provided by TintaVision in the UK is now fully accepted by almost all English Local Education Authorities as an effective intervention for dyslexic students.

Across the UK, TintaVision has worked with nearly 5000 individuals whose ages range from 7 to 70, and whose problems have ranged from dyslexia, to diabetes, from ataxia, to autism.

Asfedic Tuning has also been undertaken in schools at both the primary and secondary level, and has been sanctioned by the Department for Education and Skills(DfES) as an appropriate intervention and use of funds.

I am a registered teacher experienced in teaching at all age levels, specialising for many years in leaning difficulties and dyslexia. I have trained as an Asfedic Tuner in the UK and am pleased to bring this beneficial system to Australia as Eye Science pty ltd in association with TintaVision UK.

The small books are inexpensive, they have been recommended in TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGES and they have been featured on TV. We are currently conducting a research study in New York City in conjunction with the New York Board of Education, in which we are examining the effects of several different reading tutoring programs. We are currently seeking first- and second-grade children with reading difficulties to serve as research subjects. Children who meet qualifying criteria will receive 20 free one-on-one tutoring sessions, and will have their reading skills tested before and after tutoring to track the efficacy of the programs. We also offer parents the option to receive a free picture of their child's brain, once before and once after the reading tutoring, which enables us to examine how reading instruction leads to brain development, and also better enables us to target future reading programs to brain development.

The perfect books targeting early reading skills which I have used in speech, language, and reading remediation over the years. Each book is high level interest, colorful, and predictable for age 2 years through 7 for children who are at risk for reading difficulties; i.e., speech and language delay, ear infections, family history of dyslexia, etc. Each book will manipulate consonants around a specific vowel sound. The first book, "Can a Toucan Hoot Too?" targets the "oo" sound and the second book, "Fable of Mable with a Ladle at the Table" targets the long "a" sound. Each book contains several pages in the back which explain the targeted skills and suggestions and manipulatives for activities for early childhood, early elementary teachers, and caregivers.

My grandson is dyslexic and struggled to learn the alphabet and letter/sound connections. He would stare at alphabet pictures ("a" = apple) trying to get some clue from the picture about the meaning of the sound. Of course, the meaning wasn't in these pictures because they require an auditory association. Finally we started over with a new set of pictures that I drew. These are faces where the letter LOOKS like it's corresponding sound. The circle of the letter "b" is drawn as the bottom lip of the face producing a /b/, the vertical line of the "k" is drawn as the tongue touching the palate while the oblique lines represent the explosion of air that occurs when the sound is produced. Using these pictures Austin easily grasped and remembered letter/sound connections and learned phonics. To sound blend he just had to put his mouth in the same position as those shown in the faces. The faces as well as books and other materials I developed to help him are available at http://www.elementory.com/

As a child I had difficulty learning to read and yearned for someone/something to tell me the word the instant I realized I couldn't decode it. Now I've created stories where you can click each word and hear English. There are very short and easy stories for young children as well as longer stories that will appeal to older children and even adults learning to read. Every word is clickable to hear --even on our long stories. We offer a functioning demo for each story.

These stories can be enjoyed for free in their entirety at http://www.magickeys.com/books, however, the clickable audio feature (Talking eBooks) plus narration is available only by paid download directly off the web at http://www.magickeys.com/ebooks/index.html.

Our free website, "Children's Storybooks Online," has received enthusiastic response from teachers, students and parents for six years. One teacher, helping a struggling 12-year old to read, told us our stories were the only ones his student would read.

Please check out our stories.

New research has shown that that visual stimulation is the cause of many of the symptoms of dyslexia and as these both provokable and treatable it essential to alleviate symptoms using visual techniques.
This has allowed a new system to be developed for qualified optical professionals to measure and analyse the perceptual difficulties experienced by over 70% of dyslexics. It was released for sale to optical professionals Easter 2003 in the UK and the first practices will have the equipment by the beginning of June.
For more information on the system and some of the most exciting science go to www.orthoscopics.com
for information to signs and symptoms go to www.visualdyslexia.com

It has become clear that much dyslexia is provoked by environment and teaching techniques that do not take into account neurological function. More to follow!

Shaywitz to Speak in Twin Cities April 30

Sally E. Shaywitz, M.D. is a neuroscientist, a professor of pediatrics at Yale, and co-director of the NIH-funded Yale Center for the Study of Learning and
Attention at the Yale University School of Medicine. She has devoted her career to understanding reading and reading disabilities and is world renowned for her research.
Dr. Shaywitz is the Principle Investigator of the only longitudinal study of reading disability, the Connecticut Longitudinal Study. Since 1983, they have been studying and following over 400 randomly chosen children from kindergarten to adulthood. In this study, they wanted to learn about all children who have learning disabilities, especially reading disability or dyslexia, not just those who were identified by their schools. This study has helped to cut through and replace what was previously misleading dogma, often based on anecdotal and impressionistic information, with data based on hard science
Dr. Shaywitz will be in the Twin Cities area on a national tour to promote her new book, "Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level". Her book takes cutting-edge research and translates it into a lucid, easily implemented plan of action for parents and others who work to help the children who struggle with reading disability. She will speak first, answer some questions, and sign copies of her book after the program.

Subject: Literacy tuition and assessment, Greater Manchester. UK

Author:
Dorothy Greenald

Date Posted: 13:54:51 12/30/02 Mon

Read Write Spell structured literacy courses are offered on a one to one basis to improve students' reading, writing and spelling. All courses are in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. The tutor is Mrs. Dorothy Greenald, BA, AKC, PGDip SpLD

One or two lessons per week, each lasting about one hour will ensure significant progress. Alternatively, full days (five working hours, plus breaks totalling one hour) can be booked for the school holiday periods.

Programmes are available to suit children and young people from six and a half years to teenage. There are programmes for students with reading and spelling ages ranging from less than 6 years to 10 years 6 months. The first lesson incorporates a placement test to determine which course is appropriate.

Each lesson consists of approximately 16 carefully structured activities, which reinforce and add to skills already learned. The student hears, sees, speaks, touches and writes throughout his or her whole series of lessons. These are unique programmes, which include stickers, sticker books, and many different word level and sentence level activities presented in an attractive and innovative way. Most lessons finish with a literacy game.

The number of lessons that a pupil requires varies from pupil to pupil. The programme may be discontinued at any time. Many students discontinue Read Write Spell lessons when their reading and spelling ages have risen to approximately their chronological age. Pupil record cards are supplied with all programmes.
The lessons have been used successfully with a wide variety of pupils to raise literacy levels significantly. They are not suitable for pupils of very low intelligence.

Parents who prefer it may have the lessons as activity packs, each with a full and detailed script explaining everything to the student. A parent or another person reads the script, pausing appropriately, while the student completes the activities.

The advantages of this latter option are:
 A large saving on the cost of the lessons. Private lessons are £20 per hour. Distance learning lessons cost £10 each or £8.75 each if paid for monthly.
 No travelling
 Parents can encourage their children as they improve

If a student’s reading and spelling ages are not known, a free placement test which is easy to use at home can be requested and forwarded as an email attachment.

To request some no-obligation information about literacy difficulties, including dyslexia, and an information and order form, please send a brief email to readwritespell@eastserve.com stating whether you prefer private lessons or the distance learning option.

Quote-----

A controversial, exercise-based treatment for dyslexia appears to deliver substantial improvements, a study by UK scientists has concluded.

The treatment regime involves physical exercises designed to improve functioning of the cerebellum, a part of the brain involved in co-ordinating movement. It has been taken up by 10,000 people at Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Attention Treatment (DDAT) Centres in the UK, US and Australia.

In a report on their findings, David Reynolds at Exeter University and Rod Nicholson at Sheffield University write: "The results do suggest that the exercise treatment was effective in the controversial role of improving cognitive skills and literacy performance." Their paper has been submitted to the journal Dyslexia.

If you click on our web-site www.abcdideas.co.uk you will learn about a method of spelling which I created about 7 years ago. I appeared twice on the television in connection with this and have had a tremendous response from parents, schools, colleges etc throughout the UK and abroad. It is a fun way to learn and very effective. I love to see the confidence grow in pupils, when often for the first time, they can cope with the spelling of High Frequency Word and Homophones.
Also on the web-site you will learn of other products which have proved invaluable.
Not on the web-site as yet however is the latest product, which is called the "Backwards Dictionary". This is a CDROM which lists words according to their word endings. A very useful resource material for teachers using a structured approach to english. For example, if prefixes are being taught and example words are required for reading and spelling purposes, an ordinary dictionary provides the necessary words. If, however, suffixes and word endings are being taught, an ordinary dictionary is of limited use in these circumstances. The Backwards Dictionary provides masses of examples for each word ending.

SpLD (Dyslexia) - Assisting the community to help itself.

Working with Adults and Families to unlock potential.

After working for many years in schools/colleges I have now designed a programme to assist families to help themselves. After initial assessment, I then tailor an individual learning plan to the family. I then demonstrate new skills to parent or carer who then teaches their child. Advantages are that parent/carer are in touch with their children's dyslexia, who may then have a clearer understanding of the kind of problems children may suffer. The family are then able to offer help and fit in short bursts of learning when convenient.

A totally new and flexible approach to a positive learning experience and one that is both useful and helpful.

I live in London/Kent area in the UK and have a mobile unit that can be booked to go into school/college, if necessary, to demonstrate to tutors, teachers.

Within the world of dyslexia there is always someone special that you know that might be so talented, so artistic but has been unable to participate at school like other children in the same class. Teachers, parents, carers and dyslexics alike all have very individual needs - dyslexics need support and care! Whilst working with parents in a learning environment, a mother said a few years ago, "If I knew what to do I would do it"... desperate to help her child I could see the pain in her eyes, so I designed a solution! The Centre provides help, care and support for dyslexics from the age of 5 to 95; there are no barriers to learning whether a student is at basic skills level or degree status a dyslexic is in a state of confusion without proper help. Help is given at the correct level and pace. After a very short assessment individual lesson plans are given on a regular basis. The lesson plans include lots of games and fun so that a negative learning experience is a thing of the past. The teacher is assessed upon their own capabilities and reassured in any areas where further degrees of difficulty exist. Any/all problems are dealt with as quickly as possible. The lessons offered are informal and easy to work with. I have worked with children and adults and everyone has benefitted from the lessons. It works, but you have to help with all the hard work. In the end of course it is well worth the effort because together we work to "cut the confusion" - all you have to do is be brave and go for it. My father was extremely talented and loved but could not write a word without copying it, of course all the copying in the world could not have helped him. I have also worked a long time seeing talented people starved of their potential. These are a few reasons why I set up the Centre to offer help within the community of dyslexia. www.dyslexiafamsupp.com will offer a little more information about the Centre and email addresses
I am also about to set up a service offering answers to individual questions rather than offering individual learning plans/courses which may also be useful. The Centre offers quality, care and of course unlocks the potential that you always knew about but could not unlock yourself!

She promised the parents of those Junior High students she would teach them to read; she kept her promise.

I have been teaching speed reading to children from ages 7 on up since 1997. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the most gifted speed readers in many of my classes turn out to be the Dyslexic students.

I have written a book, SPEED READING 4 KIDS, which shows how to teach speed reading to children (including Dyslexic and ADD children). It is available on Amazon.com and on my website (www.speedreading4kids.com). If you purchase it from my website, you can also get a 90 minute video for a nominal cost which shows me teaching a group of 5 children how to speed read. After 90 minutes, 4 out of the 5 children were able to read over 2,000 words per minute, including the two youngest (ages 7 and 8).

It is not uncommon for children to attain reading rates of over 2,000 words per minute with good comprehension (By comparison, most college graduates read at about 300 words per minute). The Dyslexic children, especially, are more likely to have photographic memories in conjunction with their speed reading than most other children.

If you are not satisfied with the manual, just return it for a full refund of the purchase price.

The Dyslexic Adult in a Non-dyslexic World
by Ellen Morgan and Cynthia Klein
Publisher: Whurr, 2000
ISBN: 1861562071

It is refreshing to find a book devoted to the experiences of dyslexic adults, since much of the available literature focuses on children. 'The Dyslexic Adult in a non-dyslexic world' was a welcome addition to my bookshelf. It is eminently readable and combines an 'academic' understanding of the issues with down-to-earth examples based on interviews with dyslexic adults. I particularly liked the fact that it gave a 'voice' to many people who have previously been ignored; namely, those adults whose dyslexia was not identified at school. Their stories, told through their own words, are well integrated into the various themes of the book. As the parent of an adult dyslexic son, I was able to identify my son's experiences with many of those described by the interviewees. This book presents a realistic view of the problems and difficulties encountered by many dyslexic adults, but gives a balanced account by also exploring the many strengths which dyslexic adults may possess. It should appeal to a wide range of readers, including non-dyslexic members of the dyslexic adult's family, teachers, employers, friends and, perhaps most importantly, to dyslexic adults themselves. My advice--get it!

JustVanilla offers an online service with many features for those with dyslexia. Members can sign up for an account which gives them a personal URL to access their Home page from any computer in the world.

You can store bookmarks on-line and set a wide range of personal preferences for viewing our site. Page background colour, text and hyperlink colours, font face and size are all customisable. Users can also increase the spacing between lines of text, between words and even between the letters within each word.

You can remove images (including our logo!) and banner adverts (which we do not carry) as well as the table structure of the website to make it easier to use screen readers. All this and much more ....

By using our Access Gateway users can then impose many of these preferences on other people's websites. No software is required so once set your settings are available to you from any computer in the world be it home, school, work, public library or an Internet cafe in outer Mongolia! (The word spacing settings only apply to our site at present but we are hoping to extend that).

Via our Gateway we also make available the excellent, and comprehensive, BBC text only news service. You may also access WAP Phone sites in full screen mode. This powerful source of information in short concise sentences is ideal for those with dyslexia, now you do not have to view it on a minute mobile phone screen. From a vast range of news to sport, horoscopes, games, quizzes to weather and all bang up to date in your personal preferences.

We also offer a free download demo of our talking web browser which speaks the text of web pages to reinforce your on-line learning. You can also use it to improve comprehension of 13 languages, simply change the language of the voice and visit a website in that language. Email is also spoken aloud.

Bon voyage. Check it out at JustVanilla.

I am not sure how to teach my son to read. He reads and writes his letters backwards. He has been taught in public school to sound each letter out individually, but cannot put the sounds together to make words. The individual letter sounds seem to be making it harder for him to read. The public school shoved him in a reading program that has just degraded him and made him not want to read..They yell at him to read fast..but i have noticed that he is not reading..he is memorizing the words..if i go back and point to a word for him to read...he has no clue. It seems that the more they yell at him to read faster the more frustrated he becomes..he does wonderful with math and numbers and loves it. I see how sad he is that the reading is so difficult, and the way the teachers say he is lazy and just does not want to do the work. That is not the case, he is very smart and wants to read, but he is seeing his letters backwards..Help! My son is intelligent but the public school says they cannot test him till he is in 4th grade..I see a big problem with that. I have withdrawn my son from public school and we now homeschool. He has gained a bit of confidence but still has difficulty. Can someone please send me information on the best way to teach him to read. Every child has a spark, and I can see that spark in my son...Any information would be very much appreciated..

I am working on a long essay 'Using a Montessori approach to teach Traveller children in the 21st century' as part of a course on teaching pupils with dyslexia. I have found the Montessori method useful for teaching children with a variety of learning difficulties, or just delayed literacy, including my son (now 14), who is autistic, and who I taught at home for 8 years. The term 'multi-sensory' is used a great deal in dyslexia literature, but Montessori has never been mentioned. I made the connection the first week, and my essay will contain the diary of work I have done with 5 Traveller children recently. One of the children is probably dyslexic, and has improved greatly while I have been teaching her. Please contact me if you have used Montessori's ideas with your dyslexic pupil/child, or if you are interested in this.
