I have some suggestions for you to help with spelling lists, they work with my son. If your child is a physical or hands on learner, try spelling lists using a games such as:
play tanks where he needs to tell you the letters of the word followed by the name of the word then he can “shoot” you, then you do the same (so he hears the letters and word over and over) move around a lot during this game, dance, play patty-cake, spin him around, etc while saying the letters and then the word.

My son is 10 years old and is very dsylexic. When he was assessed he was put in the 1 percentile for rapid naming (naming letters) and also has trouble writing.

If you find out that your son is dsylexic, I highly recommend checking out the Davis dyslexia program, it helped my sons reading significantly. My son has said to me that he wishes everyone that is like him could take the Davis program. It is expensive though, so if you can't afford it, Ron Davis does have a book out that you can try to follow. Your son would need to be 8 years old for the program. They do this to ensure that the child is mature enough to handle it.
