In my opinion, the majority of dyslexic individuals have undiagnosed, and therefore untreated, vision problems of the sort that are usually addressed by vision therapy.

Think about it. Your daughter suddenly regressed, and to the degree that she herself noticed the regression. This wouldn't happen if it was the sort of "brain problem" that people keep claiming is dyslexia. Her brain regressed overnight?

But if it's a vision problem, or more precisely a problem with poorly developed vision skills, then it's entirely possible that she could regress suddenly. All it would take is a stressed visual system, and most of us endure visual stress one day that wasn't present the previous day, for lots of reasons. In your daughter's case, however, it throws her back into the category of child who suddenly can't make sense of print again.

All dyslexic children (or those even suspected of being dyslexic) should be evaluated by a developmental optometrist before spending time, effort and money on other therapies. Those other therapies might indeed be necessary in some cases, but the visual system should be the first priority.

Here's a link to the relevant page on my website, where I try to explain all this in more depth: The Vision Piece of the Dyslexia Puzzle

Hope this helps.
