Subject: Self inflicted gun wounds

How many people here know someone that has accidentally or intentionally shot theirselves. If it were accidental, what was the reason they give for it happening? I've personally known three and all three said they were cleaning their gun when it was loaded.

My great uncle served under Pattons command in WWII. From what I understand in those days, a drill sargeant would train his men in boot camp and then lead them on into battle as opposed to training them and then turning them over to someone else for combat duty. Therefore, close bonds are created, just like dog trainers, as the trainer sees his group respond, with enthusiasm and loyalty to his commands.

My Uncle lost all but one of his men during a european campaign. The experience did devastate him but he recovered as best he could, came home and started his family. That marriage fell apart shortly after the birth of his child which was also probably the last straw for my uncle. He used a 410 gauge shotgun to try and take his life. However, with most cases of attempted suicide by firearms, the person tends to jerk when he pulls the trigger and the shot is usually off mark. So instead of my uncle killing himself, he disfigured the side of his face and was committed to the VA hospital for the next some 20 years until my grandfather raised enough stink to get him out.

I was very proud of my great uncle. His life trials were difficult, but when I first met him, he always was laughing or talking about something upbeat despite all the difficulties he dealt with. The one thing that still disturbs me till today is that my family was ashamed of his attempt at suicide. They covered for him with the story that he was "trying to clean a loaded gun" line. I've heard that excuse with ever attempted suicide, by gun and its become so see through that people shouldn't even try anymore.

Life is hard and all species of life are capable of just giving up and not try to live. Humans are probably the only ones that will try to take their on lives to shorten the pain but we are probably the only ones that can study history and see what it is that we are in for in the long run.

I am not writing to make a point, just expressing some beliefs about life. But I certainly don't want to encourage anyone to through in the towel early in life. I do believe if your terminally ill and the quality of life is deteriating with no hope of getting better, then maybe it is the way to go. But when young with years ahead to do things, fight for your self-preservation. Next to reproduction, it is our most important job!
