Albert... If my feeble memory serves me correctly, I recall that most (if not all) of the check printers used the tape drives to drive the typesetters - I think they used to punch the tape with Frieden Justowriters - I remember seeing John Harland's operation many years ago and they were running 3 Lino Electrons for the check imprints running the stock on Mehile Verticals 3-up. Impressive slick operation (then).
Might try checking with any of them to see if any info might still show up? One never knows. Again, I assume this is what you are referring to... Good Luck!
