Since even the MP3 through cassette adapter test didn't work, it's possible the playback board has failed. Did you have the volume turned up nice and loud, with PLAY depressed, and did you try various positions of the fine tuning (azimuth) control? The upgrade kit will only eliminate problems with the cassette deck and tapes, of course. It might be worth calling Randy Cox at 714-404-2635 to see about exchanging your playback board for a known good one. A test you could try before doing that would be to turn the 3/4 bit and range dials each left and right about 15 times then leave them set with the arrows drawn on them pointing straight out from the board (perpendicular to the surface); this is the factory default position. Exercising the pots temporarily scrapes away oxidation that might be affecting the resistance; you could do the same with the tempo dial too (leave it centered afterwards) and then see if you have any luck playing a tape. Always be sure to unplug the Pianocorder and wait a minute or two before touching any internal components.
