PIANOCORDER PLAYBACK WITH ACCOMPANIMENT – PLUS: RECORDING YOUR OWN SELECTIONS…

There are quite a few MIDI selections which are free to download from numerous websites, however I quickly discovered that the majority of these MIDIs don’t have piano tracks in the recordings. Mark Fontana’s Plugin specifically ignores non-piano music (as it should), but this also prevents the playing of quite a few (maybe most) of the free contemporary (etc.) downloads! However, with a little practice you can edit these files and change other instruments to piano very easily, creating music for your Pianocorder. One shareware program that makes this possible is called “MidiRunner” (www.midirunner.com) and is free for 30 days, and is only about $15 to purchase. Midi recordings have up to 16 tracks with possible selections of at least 127 different instruments which include piano. You can edit any or all of the tracks to become piano, while listening to the resulting changes on your computer. The exciting part is that you can leave some of the tracks as other instruments to accompany your piano. Set up the Windows Volume Control Panel to play the Pianocorder on one channel and the musical accompaniment on the other channel through your stereo (Mark gives detailed instructions for this in the Winamp Plugin User Manual). You’ll be really impressed – live piano and perfectly synchronized orchestra or selected instruments at the same time! With Mark’s newest and most amazing 1.07 version you can also “micro-tune” the accompaniment to exactly match your slightly out of tune* (if its anything like mine) piano. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of experimenting with this astounding added feature.

Also, if you are interested in being able to play and record your own selections, but have given up because of the “no-longer-state-of-the-art” Pianocorder keyboard recording switches, there is a great solution. A company called Midi9 (www.midi9.com) that produces the Keyboard Sensor strips for other recording pianos, makes a retrofit system which can be installed on your Pianocorder. The sensor strip is nearly identical in size to the original Pianocorder recording switch assembly. It took me about 2 hours to complete the installation on my upright. I believe that it would be somewhat easier on a grand. Their system will allow you to record your own performance in Midi, and also allows you to use your piano as a “keyboard” through which you can either play live (or record) any midi instrument(s) you would like. The capabilities and adjustments are outstanding and too numerous to detail here. You can play, record and create your own selections and accompaniment for playback and/or sharing. The folks at Midi9 are really friendly, easy to talk to, and knowledgeable (talk to Jack). With this upgrade, coupled with Mark Fonatana’s Plugin, I’m convinced that your Pianocorder will perform circles around all of the other high tech state of the art units on the market!
