I suspect the dearth of information is largely due to the stigma of any sex-related profession in the notoriously repressed 1800's, not to mention sexism. Unless you're writing nonfiction, a historical novel, or something for school, you're probably better off just exercising artistic license and making shit up.

System of a Down is always good though. (unless you meant some other SoaD with which I am not familiar, and I am merely displaying my ignorance here.)
