BEEEP! BEEEP! My alarm clock scolded me for sleeping to 7:00 a.m. I yawned and walked to the stove. I grabbed the teapot and filled it with water. Turning on the stove, the phone rang.
"Hello, Ava here, may I be of assistance?" I asked politely.
"Hey, Mrs.Saddles! This is Janet, you know, from Montana."
"Oh, yeah! Hey girl! I haven't talked to you since, gosh I don't remember!"
"Oh, I heard you married Tavin."
Again I felt a ping in my heart. "Yeah, but he died in a car accident."
"Oh. Well, did you have any kids?"
"Nope, I just adopted one."
"Neato! Listen, I'm coming down to Virginia today for shopping, want to come?"
"No, but I'm sure my daughter would LOVE to!"
"Goody! I'll call later."
"Good, just say you are a friend of her mom, Ava, and say your name, and she will remember you from when we went to Monatana."
"Gotta go."
"'Bye!"
I hung up and poured myself some tea, and left Julia a note saying: "You remember when we went to Montana, right? Well, my best friend, Janet is coming down. She will call and she wants to take you shopping-please go! I have a lot of work to do on the horses! You need to give Ele a rest, too. Love, Mom"
...........................................................
I parked my truck and got out.
Susan and Helen were working their horses, so I decided to not bother them.
"Lets see, I think I will start with The Western Tradition today. She needs to be worked! Then Eagle, then Appeal, then I will try to work my stallions."
I went to the tack room, found Traditions halter and lunge lead, her new saddle that was pony-sized that I had got for Christmas.
"Here we go girl."
I first got all the energy out of her, and then I asked her to canter. She did immediately. (Hint:Have you ever read "Heartland"? Well thats the method I'm using.) I stopped her and took off the lunge line. I stepped forward, and she slowed down, I stepped back and she speeded up. I watched closely for about 10 minuets, then I saw the first sign. I clucked her into a lope, waited, and watched. Finally after 30 minuets, she bent her head down to were it was almost touching and acted like she was chewing. I turned my back, and dropped the rope. She came up to me and nuzzled my neck. To make sure, I stepped forward. She followed. I slowly turned around.
I patted her gently.
