You make some good points Tim and I hope you are right,but there are a lot of things about the Niners right now that bother me. Len Pasqurelli of ESPN.com writes that the 49'ers are "regarded as a rudderless Francise" who runs the ship? York? Donahue? You mentioned Denise D. not wanting Dennis Green as the Niner coach is she making the Decisions in the back ground? How about the very poor handling of Mariucci's firing without even having a successor in mind? Let us not forget that this francise was once the gem of the NFL.
Dennis Erikson is a fine college coach and as we have heard over and over again he is aggressive on offense. But please explain to me why you fire a coach who has a winning record in the NFL with several playoff apperances. A coach who other NFL teams are willing to make one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL for a coach in Dennis Erickson whos record in the NFL is 32-31 with no playoff apperances? And on top of all this you keep Greg take a nap Knapp on offense, who by the way called most of the plays last year which we all described (myself included) with words like dull, unexplosive, lacked killer instinct ect. Also retained as an assistant was Jim can't stop them on third down Mora. So it seems that nothing is going to change on defense next year with Mora calling the shots. Now I agree that Mariucci given the situation probably would not of taken the forty Niners to the next level. But Mooch was a successful coach and if your going to replace him you better do it by upgrading the position. And guys I ask you the question is Dennis Erickson an upgrade or a downgrade?
The descision making process made by the Niners on Dennis Green which you pointed out troubles me as well. Let me get this straight. You have moral concerns about a head coach and you hire Dennis Erickson? I guess you just forget about his past boozing, the problems at the university of Maimi, and the poor discipline that undermined the Seahawks. Apparantly Green had a problem with TO. Well what coach hasn't? Remember Mike Holgrem was the 49er's first choice for coach (Mine too I might add) but Mike made some strong comments after Owen's pen incident in the press that didn't exactly indicate that TO was Holgren's best friend. So does that mean that given the chance the niners don't hire Mike Holgrem because of TO? Dennis Green had a 101-70 record in the NFL and took an underperforming Vikings team to the playoffs 8 out of ten years. Yet the niners do not even interview a coach of this caliber? I mean why does Erikson get a chance to explain his past mistakes in an interview and Green does not. I don't understand why the niners were willing to give erickson a second chance and not Dennis Green. Any way I hope you guys are right and Erickson kicks butt. But all I can say is bring back Eddie D!!!!!
