Weiying and the rest of you,

Just want to clarify a few things.

Firstly, I want to say that I know nothing about 'negative motivation'. I played down on our chances of winning to lower the expectation and pressure on all of you, so that all of could put winning aside and focus on 'racing with your heart and soul'. That is a strategy that I always use to help myself focus and that was crucial in the last race of my life.

Secondly, I was unhappy on Sat morning, because I was already very psyched-up to lead your juniors into fighting a bruising battle for the new season, but I was afraid that your 'relaxed' approach towards NCC as compared to your 'focused' approach towards NS might send them a wrong message. I wanted them to fight in all 'battles' with the same right approach, no matter the battle is a major or a minor one. I said that all of you must win or else don't see me again out of anger (I didn't mean it... very sorry), because I was upset that you were not taking the NCC seriously enough.

Thirdly, I was upset on Sat afternoon after there were questions if I had pushed the juniors too hard, they would not be happy fighters. I didn't agree with that, because I believed that fighters were trained, not born. I felt that like what Daniel had said, if you disagreed to my intention to push the juniors to the limits, you were going against the very principles that had strengthened our team so much after the SDBA Canoeing Championships.

Fourthly, I do not fully agree with HC's approach. I feel that given a little more time and also if we had not taken so much time off canoeing to participate in dragon boat races, we would have caught up with them with our great fighting spirit and resilience. We lost out bascially in the k events, because we started kayaking later, further delayed by the late delivery of the k2's and their intensive water training during the three weeks' of our db races and common test, allowed their kayakists to improve but we were still (I feel) the most improved team in the entire competition.

Fifthly, I feel that there is a time to play and there is a time to fight. In a competition, there is no place for 'play'. Frankie and my approach to the NCC spoke for itself. We were focused. We were humble, because we considered ourelves heavy underdogs. We reminded each other to race with our heart and soul no matter whether 1st or last. (In the heats, we still bursted all-out madly at the finish even though we were way ahead.) We wished everyone else luck at the startline. We raced with heart and soul: we went flat-out right at the start, and then let our heart and soul take over at the finish. In this two races, as we had believed strongly that we wouldn't (unlike in most of training sets) we did not die out out dramatically even though we push our take-off to 5-50 cycles in the heats and 5-60 cycles in the finals. We congratulated ourselves the other competitors at the finishline.

Lastly, I want the juniors to learn something more than racing (least priority of all, having fun), that is, fighting. That was the very reason why I wanted to dedicate my last races to the junior team. In fact, I told all juniors to watch Frankie's and my race, because I promised them to let them see the true meaning of racing with 'passion' and racing with 'heart and soul'. (I had promised Meijia before Round Ubin race that I would show her the true meaning of the word 'courage', but of course she couldn't see my race then. But when she had decided to wish me luck before my heats after some hesitation, I knew I had to a lot of mental homework to do to keep in focus. I just did not want to send the wrong message.)

A lot of my methods of coaching were lousy and 'tyrannical', but I will improve on them while keeping the basic principles intact. I will not only work hard to develop more 'heroes and legends' and more 'greatest team that is, greatest team that was, and the greatest team that will ever be', but happier ones as well.
