The implication is that one of the Knights is Spike and one Xander, travelling in opposite directions -- vampire to human, human to vampire.

Here's one idea for an alternative motivation. If you are correct about the symmetry, then presumably they both do it for love, which is one reason you might have said that my surmise with respect to Xander's motivation was wrong. The implication would be Xander becoming a vampire with a soul for Buffy, so that Buffy can in some sense "get what she deserves" -- a phrase broad enough to cover an awful lot of territory, which I can't narrow down at the moment. And of course Spike would have given up death, and Xander life, for this love. Which still doesn't explain why one knight should say "life *and death*" and the other "death *and life*". Unless they both wind up getting dusted in the end, which I refuse to contemplate.

As to who Xander's sire might be -- not sure I can make a well substantiated hypothesis. With this kind of tightly-knit structure, one might think that it would be Spike. In that case, I would guess that it is more likely to be some kind of joint plan they work out than related to Spike going evil. The other possibility that would fit the symmetry requirement would be Dru, though I'm not sure exactly what the further implications of that would be.

It would also still be an open question where he gets his soul. And what price he might have to pay. And whether, in the end, that leads to "deception" and betrayal.
