I think that that is a really bad idea, no matter how much the idiot desrves it. All it will do is make things worse. I have a better idea. What if the school board and the teacher was inundated with thousands of friendly letters from native Americans and tribal councils, saying " I belong to such and such a tribe, and I am still here. My people are still here. We would be happy to introduce to to our culture.
Solidarity and peaceful persistence can accomplish much. It is important that it is friendly, otherwise it would be interpreted as harassment, and that would make things worse. I wouldn't leave white or black folks out of it either. I bet that you could get a sizable number of white and black folks to write a similar letter,
" I know members of such and such Native American Tribe, and they are still here. I am a caucasion who appreciates their culture. I know Native Americans who would be happy to introduce you to their culture."
The mistake would be to react in a violent way or write off non Native Americans who do care. I will tell you a true story. When I was in the sixth grade, our teacher was reading to us out of a history book about Manifest Destiny, the conquest of the West. She then snapped the book shut, and said, " and now I will tell you the real story of how the west was won." and she proceded to tell us of the massacres, the forced integration, and the treachery visited on Native Americans. She told us about Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, Black Elk, and the Battle at wounded Knee. She told us about the Cherokee Nation. She also told us about good white folks too, those who tried to fight the system and make a difference, and great freindships between the races despite what was happening. She told us this at great expense, and risked her job to do so, as this was in the early sixties, when it could be almost construed as a crime to say these things, and for a moment, she got some of us to understand what it felt like to be on the other side. This great lady did not have one drop of Native American blood. She was not a wannabe. She was simply a compassionate woman who felt it was her moral obligation to teach the truth. You must remember, that for every ignorant bigot, there is a hero too, and it is important not to forget this and mistakenly judge many by the actions of a few. Even the clasroom that laughed. I bet that not all of them laughed. When people are being that nasty, it is easy to focus on them and let it color everything. Don't overlook the good guys because of the bad guys. The good guys can help.
My sixth grade teacher was severly reprimanded and almost lost her job, but she earned the respect of many people.
As for the other teacher who made the unfortunate remark about Native Americans, if this is true, he deserves to be severly reprimanded. I suggest that you wait until he is no longer your teacher, then write a letter to the principal, and the school board, Was this a highschool or college teacher? Is anyone willing to be a witness once he is no longer their teacher? If you get no response, write again, until you get a response. If that doesn't work, maybe being inundated by thousands of letters will make the point. Hindsight is always wiser than forethought. It takes great courage to face one's enemy with dignity and truth. I'll bet that my sixth grade teacher won more understandng for Native Americans with her dignified truth than all the raging wannabes put together.
These are just ideas. In any case it is always wise to consult an attorney and older people with experience and balanced attitudes before taking any action.
