Subject: 2 Short GW / BC Stories

Hi All:
I have 2 GW stories that I think everyone will get a kick out of.
The GW played Chicago every 6 months during the first half of the 70's. I was working for Polydor at the time and had befriended the local RCA rep. When the Flavours tour came around, he told me the flight number that the band would arrive on, so my friend and I went down to meet them. After introducing ourselves, my friend, Burton and I ended up sitting on a bench in the waiting room talking. The discussion went from Guess Who questions to our mutual faves (Beatles... Drifters..., etc. I'll say it again, Burton, you could do a mean cover of "Ruby"). Suddenly Burton points to the small boom-box he was carrying, says "Listen to this. This is from the next album" and starts playing the tape. 30 seconds into the song, he starts singing along!! He sang the entire song for us. It was an amazing experience. As mentioned, we'd go to see the GW twice a year without fail. My friend Nancy postponed scheduled (elective) surgery so she wouldn't miss the concert. The next day she entered the hospital. I went, that same day, to a Guess Who in-store promo appearance. Burton recognized me from O'Hare and greeted me like an old friend. I brought along a get-well card for my friend and Burton not only signed it, but he took it around to each guy and got them to do the same. (She still has the card, by the way..) I've met Burton 5 or 6 times over the years and he has always gone out of his way to be friendly.

2nd story (much shorter and cuter than the first..) In 1984, my daughter was 2 years old and the Together Again video & I were going steady. My daughter knew every song on the tape and would proudly identify every band member by name. One afternoon she's playing in the next room and I hear her say, "No Randy.. You can't play with us. Burton and I are going to play, now!!" Needless to say, I laughed for hours.

Burton.. When they film my biography (Is Mel Gibson still available??) your words and music will dominate the soundtrack.

AW.. Hats off to you and the posters for creating such a tremendous site.

Hi Rod..

Great stories! I think we were at the Arie Crown at the same time, several times. Wasn't that a great room with fabulous acoustics? I can still see bad-ass long-haired Burton hitting the cowbell as "Pain Train" opened the show (that one was about Feb.,'73). But too bad about my buddie who had his big sack o weed confiscated at the door.

Me was there too several x at the AC...btw there's a block-long 50-story monolith now being erected at the old site of the RCA studios. I assume they're naming it The BC Building...if not, heads will roll...Bob

My son was 9 years old when I brought him to see Burton when he was here in Rochester in 95. We got to go backstage. Burton told him "see ya when your a rock star" and for months after that he went around singing Guess Who songs. I had to make him a dub of "Best Of The GW Live. Then at age 10 he discovered the Beatles-now he's a Beatles fanatic. oh, well, at least the kid has good taste in music.

Rick, great to see your prose again! Lost track of each other for awhile. Are you coming up for any shows? BC did mention that the U.S. is likely, although nothing is finalized yet. FYI, I know Rod, too, but we've never met. Will be meeting him for the first time at the Peterborough show. I remember your stories well, when I heard them all those years ago. Good stuff.
