Subject: Guess Who Initiation

All this reminiscing takes me back to my earliest Guess Who experience, which didn't really involve the band! Although I had heard some of their pop hits--These Eyes and Laughing, etc.--on the radio before, when I was eight or nine I could not have identified the band's album tracks without seeing the LP sleeves. One night I remember walking into my older brother Joe's (yes, Bannatyne) and he and his friend Paul were wailing on a tennis racket and a broom, air-guitering Kurt Winter's solo on Pain Train from the SO LONG BANNATYNE album. The feeling must have been communicable, because from that point on, whenever my brother left the house, I would sneak into his room, pull out SO LONG BANNATYNE or SHARE THE LAND and mimic his and Paul's gesticulations. Joe's room had a black light, and the Guess Who's poster from BEST OF was prominently displayed along side posters of the Doors, the Who, and Chicago. The memory is vivid, and I think about it every time I get together with other fans because we all share that spirit of the Guess Who's music, and we all had that initial experience that captivated us and has held us ever since.
I also owe Joe a debt of gratitude for taking me to my first concert, which was Burton Cummings at the CNE in Toronto in 1978, the first of more than 25 live Cummings shows I've enjoyed since. I am now looking forward to seeing the classic lineup for the first time, as we plan our SUMMER HOLIDAY and our road trip to Kitchener. I pray that there will be more shows, solo and as a part of the Guess Who, for us to enjoy for years to come......

Man, Am I that old? I'll never admit to the "air guitar" part. Joe - SLB
