Subject: Guess Who at the Pan Am Games

Once upon a time my husband won a corporate award and went to Toronto. His company superior got the same trip becasue she was his boss, although she arrived 2 days earlier to schmooze with the big boys in TO. My husband arrived at the hotel in time to find out that the entertainment for that night was Burton..... one of thos private corporate gigs, but somehoow hubby was not on the guest list as he was not expected until the next day. His boss lady was GUSHING for the rest of the trip as it turns out that Burton is her ultimate favourite and when she works at home she has to have Burton playing to get her through the work. Anyways, on the return of the trip, he took a 'bump' which gave him a transferable voucher for $300 worth of air travel. Fast forward a year and there I am making plans to go to WPG. My aunt was turning 85 and I have a ton of cousins there, but had only been to WPG twice. I had the the voucher for $300 and the seats sales were for $290... was this trip meant for me or what? The major cousin told me to stay away until after the Pan Am Games but I was just too buys to go out to the airport and redeem the voucher. Then one day it is announced that the Guess who are playing the closing ceremonies..... I got a ticket for 2 days earlier than I had planned, had a great deal of difficulty obtaining a rental car, but flew to WPG and saw THE Guess Who, the INCREDIBLE Guess Who. Only 4 songs PURE MMAGIC. I had been invited backstage to watch the show by a close frined of the band so I bought myself very cheap seats at the top of the stadium as insurance. Well, the friend had a drinking problem and it was not to be. I grumped at the thought of the cheap seats, but when it pooured raind I was dry!! We went for dinner afterwards at the hotel the band was staying at and the restaruant was also a bar which was open till 4 am due to the Pan Am Games and special bylaws for that time period. Burton Randy & Garry made appearrances there that night. Just think, if I'd had good seats I would have just ended up going back to Transcona to get warm and dry. Sometimes these things just drop into our laps. 22 years earlier, I was on one of my first dates with my husband when were just about to purchase tickets to "The Other side Of Midnight", I hear Burton's voice behind me. With the fastest reflexes I have ever possessed, I whirled right around to find Burton talking to his girlfriend! He remembered me of course, as I had met him after the concert he had done 2 nights before. We were seated first and they chose spots at the back of the theatre, but by time time I was averting my eyes from a gory seen, they had moved two rows behind us. I wish that we had the courage to ask them our for a beer as there was a pub right next door. We watched them get tinto a taxi and head downtown. I was too stunned to even attempt conversation. Next night my husband attends a busiiness function at the Hyatt Regency and Burton is in the same elevator as him and Burton says hello. I just came back from a free trip to the US Southwest. (we took a bummp and got travel vouchers again). Went to Vegas and saw BTO for the first time in 9 years. They treated me like royalty and I absorbed every minute of it. Onto the Scottsdale and Kale's Guess Who were playing a casino there. I hadn't seen them in 11 years so I HAD to go and see them too. Does it get anybetter than this? Time will tell and I'm waiting to see what happens with this reunion show in June. Perhaps if we had invited Burton and lady friend for a beer that night I would have one of those fantasy friendships that some people have with Burton. But maybe, if you go by Burton's Bynon interview we have been friends in another life, or will be..... Maybe this will be the year that I 'connect' with him.... sigh. What does the future hold? The only thing I'm sure of is some good old rock and roll......
