Subject: EXERPT FROM "COLOURED LIGHTS CAN HYPNOTIZE"

In late 69 or early 70 we were in NYC doing promotion for RCA. These Eyes had opened many doors for us already, and I believe we were riding the crest of Laughing, Undun, and No Time. We were being interviewed by one of those hipper-than-thou assholes with dirty hair, raggedy clothes and a fucking attitude that could have raised the Titanic from its resting place.

As the interview progressed, we all realized that the four of us were inhabiting an entirely different planet than this guy was. I felt uncomfortable with him, and although this was inherrently wrong, at least I detected something, which was more than I can now say for my three partners in the GW. This was the era, dear reader, during which a huge split had occurred between “singles” bands and the “underground, FM” groups. Obviously, we were a band comprised of four guys who had been weaned and raised on AM radio. I still find absolutely nothing wrong with that, and I still maintain that the GW had hit singles before it was “fashionable” to do so. Lord knows, nowadays (late 90’s) if any act had the string of commercial successes we accomplished in the 60’s and 70’s, they would become Elton John or something comparable. At any rate, on with this small anecdote.
As Harry Hip continued to berate us and get a handle on our squareness, he started firing questions at us that became more probing. He asked us if we liked the Grateful Dead, to which I replied No. I was telling the truth when I told him that I’d never really dug the band much, although on several occasions I’d listened to various different albums of theirs. He asked us “How much cocaine do you guys do?” as if to say that we’d never GET IT as far as the Grateful Dead were concerned until such time as we really jumped on board the blow train. I’d never even SEEN cocaine yet, much less done any, so one can imagine how much further removed my three counter parts were becoming from this interviewer.
The verbal exchange that took place after that I will never forget for the rest of my lfe. Harry Hip posed the question “How do you guys feel about the fact that your cuts are so short?”, obviously making sardonic comparison between us and groups like the Doors, Grateful Dead and several others darlings of the FM world. Jim Kale answered “Whaddya mean, man, most of our stuff is three, three-and-a-half minutes long.”
Kale had missed the point by about a light year. Poor Jim was mentally stacking up our stuff against things like “Palisades Park” and “Be Bop A Lula” while Harry Hip was comparing us to the Doors. This may not sound like a very significant rememberance at first reading, but it cuts to the very CORE of what eventually went wrong with the Guess Who.
