Subject: cover tune

Yesterday after my radio show, I was previewing new releases. I was listening to a various artists compilation titled "Simla Beat 70/71" which is a reissue of 2 albums that came out in 1970 and 1971 that documented the All-India Simla Beat Contest. The contest was sponsored by India Tobacco Co. Limited and is a collection of the best numbers played at the 1970 and 1971 contests.

A group called Genuine Spares (from Hyderabad, India) covered the Guess Who's "Proper Stranger" and it sounds pretty good! I'm going to play it next week on the air.

Anyone got a comprehensive list of GW tunes covered by other artists? I buy them when I see them more but don't specifically seek them out. Me thinks www.allmusic.com is probably a good place to start.

One of my favorite metal groups way back when was an obscure band from Texas called Bang that released several albums on Capital records in the early 70s. Much to my surprise, on their Mother/Bow to the King album they did a cover of "No Sugar Tonight." Not bad. Didn't the Friends of Distinction cover a Guess Who tune?

Not sure about Friends of Distinction, but Jr. Walker covered "These Eyes". Pick up Gowan's "Greatest Hits" CD for another GW cover song, in addition to a number of other really good songs. -- Fred

I don't recall a Friends of Distinction cover tune but I know that The Copperfield Brass, Krokus, and AC did "American Woman" (I have them). Copperfield Brass was an instrumental, Krokus was 80s hair rock, and AC was a real piece of crap punk/hardcore. According to All-Music there are also covers of "American Woman" by Due South, Jaymz Bee and the Royal Jelly Orchestra, Ian Cussick, Cake Like, and the Butthole Surfers.

I also don't have these covers, but I believe "These Eyes" has been done by Michael Bolton, Natalie Cole, and Alton Ellis.

The "American Woman" by "Due South" is the original version by the GW, which appears on the soundtrack of the Due South TV series. The song was played in one of the episodes. (Just to save you ordering it, thinking it's a new cover). -- Fred

Checked out the music library at the radio station during lunch and have a few updates.
Ian Cussick-the song is called "American Women" and is not a cover but an entirely different song.
Cake Like-the song is called "The American Woman" and is not a cover but an entirely different song.
Butthole Surfers-This is a totally reworked version of the Guess Who original but can still be classified a cover (barely). It's on their "Rembrandt Pussyhorse" album.

Hmm- this came up a year or so on the old ITW board. American Woman was covered by Crocus and Butt Hole Surfers. These Eyes was done by Jr Walker, Micheal Bolton (one of his early lp's I think.) Larry Gowan

Never Had A LAdy was covered by Tom Jones
Black Oak Arkansas did When The Band (Jim Dandy To The rescue!)

I forgot about that Black Oak Arkansas song. I've got the 45 for that one. Pretty funny stuff.

Dancin Fool was done in Finnish by singer called Hector and it is OK version. But there was also one horrible artist called Rexi, who in 1977 recorded Star Baby and Smoke Big Factory, both sung in Finnish, have not heard those two versions in ages, maybe I should try to find that album, or maybe not. But it seems he was some kind of GW fan, so maybe he wasn't so bad after all.
