Subject: Star baby

Star baby, in my opinion, was the best song released during the seventies. Anyone want to argue?

"Star Baby" is the ultimate pop song, IMO. The style perfectly accentuates the singer's supreme abilities, a next generation Elvis/Jerry Lee Lewis hybred. The Kurt solo is sassy, concise, with a nifty finish. One of the best 3 minutes on record.

So do Charlie & Bill agree, or prefer "Honky Tonk Woman"?

Lonely Days doesn't belong in that group. The Bee Gees were good (Massachusatts, Holiday, To Love Somebody, 1941 New York Mining Disaster, Words, Jumbo, The Spicks & the Specks) until Barry Gibb got stuck on that irritating falsetto voice.

Star Baby along with any other GW song I might add!

I must agree with the previous poster, I absolutely love that tune. A close second is the studio version. I can't help but crank up the volume when the solo starts. I must agree somewhat about the quality of the tune star baby. I remember the day when I was patiently awaiting the first play on the radio. Some of you ORIGINAL fan club members will recall geting notice of the airplay release date ahead of time. It was thrilling to know that it would be played on a certain day and not know what it was going to sound like. Nimbus 9

I love Star Baby. Always have and always will. Whenever I hear it, it puts me back in my senior year of high school, which was my best year in HS.
By the way, its a very tricky song to sing, patricularly in the parts where Burton crams a lot of words into a small segment:...can I take your picture in the park with silk and satin on? But then, he is a master of singing very fast when the occasion warrants it.

The ultimate example being "Shiny Stockings", of course.

I joined that fan club from the address on RFood, so I missed the advance notice. As I recall, TGW did "Star Baby" & "Straighten Out" (& "Undun" with Burton singing the bridge a little differently) on The Midnight Special well before "Star Baby" hit the airwaves, at least in Chicagoland--maybe we picked it up later during its long ride on the charts where it hit at different times in different regions--which explains its low #43 or so overall Billboard peak. That Mid Special appearance was just before the white suits.

I remember seeing Burton and the GW singing Star Baby on Midnight Special when they used to host the show on occasion. The reason it was not a bigger hit even though it was on the charts for a long time was because DJ's did not like the start of the song(there was no intro), it juat blasts off "Well I never been much for admitting things"....
It was a terrific song. Recently made tapes of favorite non-hit GW songs and one that stands out is A Wednesday In Your Garden another is All Hashed Out.

>"All Hashed Out" and "Wednesday" were both great tunes!
And who can leave out "No Time", even though it was a hit,
it was overshadowed by THE SONG...the fact that "No Time" was often used to close shows speaks volumes...it is one
great guitar tune.

At least Star Baby was one of the latter GW songs played with any regularity in the states, along with Clap for the Wolfman. But my favorite 70's release will always be "Share the Land".

Road Food was the first album I bought in real time (during it's release). I bought other albums after the fact as I was growing up. I really liked the Road Food album then and it continues to be one of my favorites - I love the vocals on Pleasin' to Reason. Star Baby is a very solid song.

I assume people realize my previous post was a joke (maybe Wasted days shouldn't have been on the list, but BeeGee's disco crap does). Seriously, I would have to say that Born to Run is the best song released in the 70's even though the Guess Who is my fav.
