No, you're not the only one. Just today, while getting ready for work, I was blasting my LIVE AT THE PARAMOUNT CD, and that drum solo at the end of "American Woman" absolutely smokes! Garry Peterson is DEFINITELY underrated.

There are certainly plenty of us around here who recognize Garry's consistently excellant musicianship on all those GW records, all the way back to Chad Allen. There was certainly nothing generic about what he did with TGW. I sometimes wish he'd been given more latitude & volume in the mix during his BC solo appearances.

Garry is/was a good drummer, I think his talent lay in creating rhythyms and good beat. He isn't much of a pounder like Keith Moon or Billy Joel's drummer but he did a good job setting the beat.
Scott, Earlier I made a comment about Garry's drum solo in the live album and I will stick with it. I think it went on too long, even though what he did was decent. I think it took away from the direction of the music, but it was very typical of concerts in the early seventies (long guitar and drum solos). To each his own.

I agree that there is a time and place for drum solos in rock, and 2000 is definitely not the time. But when I listen to The Guess Who, in most cases I'm being blown away by Burton or Randy or Kurt etc. When the solo came on, it got me thinking about the fact that Garry really is an excellent drummer. I must admit, though, that the solo was too long, but as you said, at the time it was quite common.
Maybe I should have used a better, and less obvious example, like "Tuff E Nuff" from the SHAKIN' ALL OVER album.

Glad this point came up! I've always thought Garry was an excellant drummer, very much underrated. When I was a kid, listening to AM radio, I could always distinguish Guess who music by the drumming (and of course, The Voice, duh). The drum solo in AW (according to JE's book) had been part of their show for years-it's only right that it should be part of a live album and it's a damn good solo (IMHO-I play a little and appreciate a lot).

As a drummer myself, I always looked up to Garry Peterson.
His playing was and is well above the run of the mill '70s rock and pop. I really enjoy his rolls and jazz rhythms.
