Author: R'kan and Sokorth
Subject: Flying - Finally

Sokorth informs R'kan that all are seated properly, and that none of the dragons are feeling uncomfortable. R'kan nods, then grins, remembering his own training.

"You're probably all wondering why I'm not letting you fly straight away. The truth is, flying is dangerous. You can seriously injure yourself, your dragon, another dragon, or all of the above. In threadfall, precise and safe flying is what you are wagering your life on. But, now we shall become airborne, and you shall fly - most of you for the first time."

Sokorth snakes his head around and receives an affectionate scratch from R'kan. "Sokorth here will be relaying all my instructions to your dragons, making sure there are no mistakes or misunderstandings."

First, you have to squat down on your hind legs, ready for the jump. The jump is the second most important part of becoming airborne. At the indication of the weyrlingmaster you use your hind legs and jump as high as you can. At the same time, bring your wings down. This downbeat is the most important part, for if it is not strong enough, you will fall back to the ground and might injure yourself. With the downbeat, you will lift clear of the ground. Continue beating strongly until you reach a good altitude, then you can glide for parts if you want. Landing consists of backwinging and having your legs in front of you. The backwinging stops most of your momentum, but if your legs are in the wrong spot, like behind you, you could land improperly and fall. If at any time you need help, call myself and R'kan, and we can support you or give you more instruction.

R'kan has been saying all this out loud, and now he demonstrates what he's been saying. Sokorth squats down, then with leg muscles rippling jump upwards. He is jst at the peak of his jump when his wings make the downbeat, and he is airborne. He circles the barracks, then lands safely, settling back down to watch the others. His eyes whirl blue with content.

"One of you at a time, for now. We don't want any crashes."

((that just means you post both taking off and landing in the same post. Effectively that means it's only one at a time.))

"Rinali, J'dan, All'ndar, J'xom, Keiko, Allirea, Raen. That's the order you shall fly in. Now, begin, and fly."

He smiles and motions for the first dragon and rider to take off.
