Establishing a new capital city is a well precedented way of altering a country's perceptions of itself - we did it in Australia when we created Canberra in 1927 [it only took us 26 years to choose a site & being moving in - no need to rush these things] Brazil did it in the 1950's with Brasilia, the British in India with New Delhi, & more recently the Nigerians with Abuja & the Malaysians are in the process of building some city I can't recall the name of

BUT .... placing a capital in an area away from the major centres of population &/or economic activity will simply create a new set of whinges - in Australia the common idea is that Canberra is artificial [43 suburbs looking for a city] & remote & its occupants are isolated & out of touch - whilst this is not exactly true it is not exactly untrue either - the Brazilians say much the same & we all know about those disturbing folks in the wilds of the USA who believe their own federal govt in DC is out to get them

A new capital will create a huge economic boom for the new capital region ..... & decimate the old one. Better make sure that Ottawa has something to replace the machinery of govt - maybe a gradual move - Australia did not finish moving the federal govt to Canberra until the late 1970's [almost 50 years] & still maintains a larger presence in Sydney & Melbourne than it does in Canberra

Then there is the cost.....

Still it is an idea worth some more thought

Ian
