I think the biggest problem with 5508 boxes is the addressing data which seems to be a tougher nut to crack than other systems. The scrambling itself (here at least) is very ordinary compared to some so is not very hard to reverse if the data is ignored. If you purchase a prebuilt descrambler you'd want some sort of 'cash back if not satisfied' guarantee - our laws rule out this option, in fact I'm probably breaking some federal law just talking about it.
As for channel allocations, the box can tune anything up to 1GHz so the channels in your area are decided by the communications authorities and what bands & frequencies were allocated to the cable company(s) - usually in the high VHF to hyperband UHF ranges as everything else is normally reserved for FTA services. The downconverter antenna (mmds services) determines where the channels end up in the spectrum and you just have to find them and the numbers for the digital tuner.
