This may not be feasible from you, but have you considered attaching a compressor between your microphone and camera? they sell relatively cheap ones which will basically boost signal levels only above a certain threshold. I myself don't like the automatic gain control, as it is not reliable at getting a consistent audio signal.

One of the best ones I have seen in the sub $200 range is the "really nice compressor" at <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.fmraudio.com.">http://www.fmraudio.com.</a> Absolutely perfect for getting highest quality analog audio such as speech.
