You can get around the auto-gain control by mixing an inaudible signal (under 10Hz or over 18KHz) with the camera's input. The circuitry will clamp down the signal, leveling it at the inaudible frequency's volume. Using a mixer, the volume control for the channel of the "ghost" signal actually acts as a reverse volume control -- push it up and the auto-gain will lower the volume ... bring it down and the auto-gain will raise the volume.
