Please give more info on the engine type, engine number prefix letter etc., I presume it's a aircooled 1600cc engine in a Transporter, but need to be sure. The thing you have undone is the Oil Pressure Relief Valve, you should have an exploded view of it in your Haynes Manual, but you can also see the diagram on the VW Heritage website, in the Oil Pumps and Oil Coolers section. Basically, the piston goes in first, flat side is at the top, then the spring, then the threaded plug, which has an oil seal on it. You can probably re-use the oil seal, but if it leaks, make a note to replace it as soon as possible. Good Luck.
