Subject: Street paries

Lovely afternoon. The road fronting the church, school and village hall was closed off to traffic and there was a village street party to celebrate the jubilee. Couple of hundred people there, which means half the village, tables absolutely groaning with food that people prepared and took with them (one of the organisers said we could do with another party tomorrow to eat up all the left overs), the vicar opened it, we had some musicians playing the piano and French horn, and the school children sang for us. Had to have it in the Village Hall as it had been raining most of the morning but they had left some tables out under cover and the latecomers just got themselves some more chairs and sat out there as the rain had finally gone. There was a competition for the best home-made crown and village fete type games such as a coconut shy and other such things. Started at 12.00 and we left at about 2.15 as we were getting very stiff from sitting on plastic chairs. Music was still going strong at 3.30, and I don't know if it has finished yet, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. But all in all a very good afternoon.

Gilly
