Do you remember the song "Without You" that was a big hit for Harry Nilsson in the seventies? The song was sad (but beautifully sung) and I've just learned from a documentary that the real-life events that accompanied it were not only sad but tragic. Here we go.......

The song was written by two members of Badfinger, a group from Swansea (I never knew that!) signed up by the Beatles' record company Apple. Their version hardly got any airplay but when Harry Nilsson recorded it in London the resulting single achieved massive sales. The two songwriters received royalties but later discovered most of their earnings were being syphoned off by their manager. After getting into financial difficulty one of them hanged himself in his garage and the other did the same not long after.

Harry Nilsson coped badly with fame, becoming an alcoholic and a heavy user of drugs. He later discovered that his accountant had embezzled millions from his bank accounts, leaving him with $300. The accountant got two years in jail and Nilsson never regained a cent of the lost money to support his six children. He was reduced to trying to flog his songs to marketing companies to be used in adverts. In 1994 he died of a heart attack.

Whenever I heard that song it brought back fond memories of my teenage years. It won't be quite the same now.

On a happier note I found this "mix-up" on YouTube of an accordion tune from Jimmy Shand and a vocal track from the rapper 50 cent. Enjoy!

BB
