I remember at a regimental dinner in Northern Ireland we had a piper, and I asked one of the waiters (who was actually the mess manager but I think one of the usual girls was absent that night) if he could ask the pipe if he could please play Black Bear, and the mess manager must have told him exactly where I was sitting because he came parading down our side of the table, stopped almost directly behind me, but just so that I could see him, played Black Bear, winked at me and then played something else as he marched on. It was fabulous. Woman over the other side of the table asked me what it was all about and I told her that I just happened to like that piece and had especially asked for it. After the meal had finished the piper found me and told me it was the first time he had been asked for a particular piece at a dinner and was there anything else I would like before he went, so I asked for Mairie's Wedding, which was a delight, and he marched himself out to Scotland the Brave. It was a good evening.
