My father was something like that too.He also worked in CKD stores and seemingly could'nt resist anything shiny. We lived in a flat at the time on the Bathgate Road and most of the doors had "grab" handles from the trucks on them, they were nice enough, but still handles from a lorry.

One time he decided to make a shower stall from items he procured from you know where. It consisted of a ring made from brake tubing and a sheet of plastic paper stuff for the curtain, this was suspended from nails in the ceiling.I think he bought the hose thing from a store, apparently they did'nt use that type of thing in the manufacturing of lorries. It took him quite a while to get it all in place and then he invited "anyone" to be the first. He did'nt get any takers and the next day it was gone.Apparently when you closed the "curtain" the flow of the water caused it to cling to you.Not what you want when your trying to wash yourself.

I spent my teenage years shaving in a mirror that said "CAUTION IMAGES MAY APPEAR CLOSER THAN THEY SEEM" .

The one success that he had was back in the early 70s when we had the blackouts because of the miners strike, well he set up a lighting system in the living room powered by batteries and we all used to sit and play cards waiting for the power to come back on.We had many a good night by the dim light of the "dome lights" with no telly to bother about.Sometimes when the power came back on we would ignore it and keep playing with the dome lights, they were simpler times.

After I left stores I worked in maintenance and most of my work was doing "homers" for people,an awful lot of parts from tractors and trucks can be adapted to fit the family car .We made gates and fences and sledges and tables any thing you wanted .

How did the tannoy system work out?
